how many coils do i cut off

You need to cut your spring to an overall length of 3 1/8".
Older DS's had to be cut 3-5 coils to come to this length.
The new springs are 3 1/8 from the factory.
Do not go shorter, static height is 2 7/8, you need alittle load so slide does not bounce/flutter.

Oldmanracing,
Could you give me a rundown on all of the modifications you have made to the stock carb on your ds? I'm into endurance racing and do not want to invest in a carb that will increase fuel usage. Therefore, I want to modify my stock carb to make it as efficient as possible.

I cut 4 coils on my 04 bajax, didn't really notice any loss or gain, but when i had my carb off, if i gave it a little shake, I could hear my spring bouncing around inside....(i'll check, it could have been the float... and I'll measure the overall length with no tension on it to see what that is) I'll get back to ya on what I find....

04 and 05 springs are already shortened. No need to cut. My 03 I ordered a spring from an 05. It was cheap. I did the cutting the spring trick before and it worked great, but then I replaced it with a new spring.

Yeah, my spring now dials in at 2.60 inches, and it is supposed to be 2 7/8 inches or 2.875 inches, so I'm too short. I never did read about the 04 springs already being shorter than the previous years when I made my cut, But hopefully for everyone else they will know before hand. Well, off to pick up a new spring..lol

If your spring is 3 1/8", leave it alone. It is fine as is.
On your spring is both ends closed, that is, last coil meets itself.
Or is one of the ends open, that is, the twisted wire does not meet itself.
If one end is open then someone has cut the spring already.
Or if both ends are closed, somone installed a newer spring.
