Default clutch housing shaft!!! help,help!

went to install new clutch lever today. all went good i thought, wrong was I. i went to tighten up allen head on the cable lever release on top of the shaft going int to clutch housing and it broke!!! looks like it can be tacked with a welder for a temp fix, better than JB weld! i went ahead an ordered one. it will take 3 to five days from monday. no good got to be up and running for the 4 stroke wars!!! my question is how do i know the shaft is placed in the housing correct ?? i have it marked were it was , but what about depth in the case?? did not want to pull cover off if possible. just changed oil prior.i appreciate any help, carlton
