DS Day's 2007 - Location

Bigdaddy,
I went on to Yahoo Maps, found out that the distance between Henderson Nevada and Winchester Bay Oregon is 16 hours 13 mins or 1055.2 miles.
Now, I want to make it perfectly clear that I am not promoting Oregon - heck I’m the only one that voted for Winnemucca! LOL But I do want to answer your questions since that's where I grew up. Mike, feel free to jump in anytime. The Oregon Dunes has three major areas. From south to north, its Coos Bay/North Bend area, Winchester Bay and finally Florence. There are a lot of motels as follows in each of the towns listed by city - For example, North Bend, Winchester Bay and Florence. I used to stay in motels everytime I went to the dunes. There is camping as well and group sites will have to be organized. If the area is chosen, there are good drag hills in Florence and a pretty darn nice place to flat drag. NO TIMED STARTS! Florence also has a decent drag hill, check out my pics for a picture of it. Coos Bay / North bend has a few motels, but the area is huge! There’s a KOA campground, another one called Spinreel, and my favorite called Horsfal. Horsfal is famous for its Boxcar hill for drags. It’s not steep, and it’s not long, but it’s the place where they go. The razor backs in the Coos Bay/ North bend area are awesome - great place to learn how to jump, they are everywhere. Horsfal has showers, and a nice paved parking lot and easy dune access. You can even make it to the beach. There are tons of sand trails - This makes group rides very fun. There are also hill shoots that are highly technical because the trails are very steep and weave around trees and other obstacles. Winchester bay is where they hold Dunefest every year. They do have that drag area, but the timed starts are probably a no go. They also have some of the largest dunes in Oregon. They have a lot of camping, but fewer motels. You can camp in RV areas, paved parking lots or on the dunes. In fact, the last parking lot is right next to an open area with hard pack sand that is very popular - I can’t see why a group camp can’t be done there. My favorite area is Coos Bay / Northbend at Horsfal campground. There's so much to do its insane - That’s my overview of the Oregon Dunes.

BigDaddy,
Here Video is a video of me dragging my stock DS with ORM carb mods and slipon at Sand Mountain NV.. Thes are just two hills we found out duning, and not the comp hill. The part with just me and a single Raptor is the back side of the big bowl.
I have only been there once, so far, but there were many places that you could just have a quick drag or two as you are out duning.
I really like it an plan on going again in October since I will have a few more things doen to my DS by then.

Can you give us an overview?
Oregon would be very nice, I'm just not all that sure the noise restrictions would be all that great. I can work with the noise restrictions, but wouldn't really be a good spot for racing. That said, DS Days isn't really about racing - just a nice time to have a race or two. Not sure what the drive would be for me to the Oregon Dunes, but I'm sure it would be WAY to LONG. Anybody have an idea what it would take from Vegas? Also, are there hotels around? One of my options would be to take my Flat Trailer and stay at a Hotel. The pull with a big toy box for 15 hours might be one that I wouldn't take. Not sure though, I've never pulled it that far. To this point, the trip to LS was the longest I've pulled it. Used plenty, but when I have Coral Pink at 3.5, Dumont at 2, Sand Hallow at 2, and Glamis at 4 hours.... Not much need to do a lot of traveling.
Hey Marky, throw Coral Pink down on the list as well. I'll organize that as well.
Coral Pink is a WONDERFUL place and FREE if we all camp in the Meadow. There are no noise restrictions what are monitored, it's a FAMILY dune site for sure. Way more to dune than just a hill, and the trail and ridge rides are to die for. We know it like the back of our hand and there is even a hill to race on. This might be ideal for everyone. Certainly one of the most beautiful for sure, and we can also have it on Labor day.
Just a thought.

But if it is put on there I can't change my vote. To bad. I would vote for that.

Ya, its too late for ideas - We had a week to come up with the areas - Adding a new area now would throw the entire vote off and that would be chaos. Sorry!

Bigdaddy,
Sorry man, We had a week to come up with the ideas. It just wouldnt be fair to the ones that already voted or the other organizers. What we have to work with is what you all came up with. But there's always next year. I might add that this year was the first year that we broke away from Sand Mountian Nevada, and held it in Utah. We now have some great choices. However, if we keep changing the poll, it will be worthless, and also not very credible. The last thing I want is someone to send me a note crying foul! You get my drift???

first off Oregon dune patrol, do you live in oregon? you mentioned that dumont was only a 450 mile drive for you and I cant understand how that can be if you live in oregon? I live in central california and dumont is 550 miles for me and oregons closest border is still 300 miles north of me. I posted a link of dumonts weather 10 day forecast 2 days or so before this years ds days and at that time the temp was from 105 at the lowest and I believe 108 and the guys that live in that area commented that it was unusually cool for that time of the year. If you oregon and utah guys head to dumont for labor day you will be shocked and amazed by the heat.
here is next weeks weather . they dont call it DEATH VALLEY for nothin! LOL! you guys have fun!

I dont know if you've been following the discussions regarding Bigdaddy's posts. He is proposing that for his area, Dumont Dunes, that he will hold the event in the fall of 2007 (of course if he wins the votes). So, today's current temps really wouldnt matter if he decides to hold DS Days in the fall at Dumont. Of course, there are issues with changing the date, but he's been pretty upfront about that since the begining of this thread. All the other potential organizers have not indicated that they would change the date away from Labor Day. I think that I would prefer it being held on Labor Day, and I have mentioned that as well as some others. There have also been some that dont mind it being moved. This will all come down to voter preference.

If Labor day has to be the day.... Dumont is going to be OUT! And that is OUT with a capital O! TOO HOT! Supersonic is completely right.
Bottom Line. Let's not get to set in stone on the voting and not making sure that everything is discussed. I wouldn't worry one bit about re-posting a new vote with more particulars involved. For sure Coral Pink should be added, and Dates should be discussed before we pole. Do to such a low number of people voting, what would it hurt to do it again. I would let the voting take place for at least a good month or month and a half. We are in NO HURRY WHAT SO EVER. I can plan this in two months, so as not to put to fine a point on it.... Let's take our time.
Sand MTN. is no big deal for me. Yes, it's longer than I'd like to drive but EVERYONE WILL HAVE THAT ARGUMENT.
the more I think about it.... I think Coral Pink is the ideal spot. SPECTACULAR RIDES, GREAT RACE SPOT, GREAT CAMPING, KANAB (THE TOWN) IS 30 MINUTES AWAY, AND THE RIDING ALONG WITH VIEWS ARE SOME OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL IN THE COUNTRY. Helmets are not the law, you can ride two up (for those that would like to simply utility quad to the race or on a trail, plenty of kid riding... I just don't know if it can be beat. Best of all, is that even on a busy weekend, the dunes are pretty much quite.
Coral Pink might even be a nice middle ground for people in UTAH, AZ, NV, CA, NM, TEXAS, CO etc. etc.
Kind of hard to beat it guys and girls.
