DS Day's 2007 - Location

it was that and more for me. i was there aug. 1st and it was the most horrible trip of my life. i dont think i'll ever go back to pismo. although there was one big hill out there. maybe 150-200 feet tall. if it werent for the tokers camping next to us it wouldn't have been a good time at all. i say oregon, or sand mountain, nv.

The bad thing about Oregon is the sound restrictions. We didn't have a problem during Dunefest but that was just cause of all the loud bikes there I think. If it isn't overly busy than I wouldn't want to chance it. And it won't be to fun if it is overly busy. I agree that maybe every other year maybe it should be at Fallon. But that is just my .02 also. May not hold alot but it is mine.

Sick, remember that DS days isn't about just racing.... It's more for the DS Family to get together. Racing is just a GREAT addition. I love racing the hill... when it's run correctly.
Not to worry, Mario and I will get something going at Dumont if it Kills US!

ok , no offense ODP but your entire statement above is a bit to intimidating for me or probably anyone else who was considering helping put one of these events on. I didn't actually sign up for anything and just mentioned that I would like to have the event held at sand mountain NV because it seemed most fair for all and would most likely be the easiest place to do all the things that we couldnt do at Utah or Pismo or in Oregon. I was for some reason placed on the list as a "sponsor" without my consent but I'm not here to complain about that and was willing to do my best to make the event fun should Nevada be chosen for next years ds days. Your whole statement above scares me I personally feel you are getting a little to serious about the whole thing IMHO and trying to make one person responsible for setting up the entire event including all racing details , trophys, t shirts, securing enough camping area, pot luck details, picture times, scheduling rides, LEGAL MATTERS???? after seeing myself on the list I was willing to do my best to try and set up a fun time for all but after viewing your statement I feel that some of you may be expecting more than I am capable of or willing to provide. my idea of "sponsoring " an event like this would be to arrive early in the week before the event is to take place and secure enough real estate for everyone to camp in comfortably , maybe set up a few group rides and show everyone all the interesting sites and fun riding spots that might normally be missed, maybe do the pot luck and let all the other event stuff take shape naturally. I am not willing to set up brackets or classes or determine who should race who or be legally responsible for anyone being injured while racing and I personally feel that everyone will know who they want to run against and it will just happen. there will probably only be 30 or so ds's in attendance and only a few of them will want to be involved in any actuall racing. I personally feel that if your statement above is honestly what is to be expected from an area "sponsor" that one person is to be held solely responsible for all details and is also to be held accountable for everyone having a good time. this is more than I feel is fair to expect from just another dune rider and this situation would personally make me uncomfortable . I go to the sand to meet new people, try out mods on my machine, ride in the sun , hang around the fire and share stories. some days I want to dune ride and some I may sit at the bottom of the hill and run what looks fast ,or a may just choose to sit in the shade back at camp with a popsicle and watch the world go by. my meaning here is that I go to the sand to escape stress and the rigors of a schedule and responsibility. This whole thing sounds like more than I want to deal with so please remove my name from the list as sand mountains sponsor. Thanks and good luck to who ever takes this on. I would still be willing to set up a bigger and better pot luck next year where ever everyone decides to go if this helps. Gregg

Typically the organizer will do the following ....
1) Figure out what types of events can held at the dunes and organize them.
2) Figure out how many people will be going
3) Figure out how you can get all those people to the camp, and have a place for them to camp
4) make sure whatever event is chosen, that you are there to manage it.
5) There could be trophys involved, which means money, so you have to consider how you will get that. You may charge for T-shirts in order to do that.
Those are the 5 basic points as I see them and they are pretty loose in regards to what you actually have to do. You can do more or less. There is no set of rules for this or any particular way that you have to do it. Its important that people know the area in which they will be organizing (IMHO), or learn an area so they can make it work. It probably means a lot of calls into the BLM or whatever agency regulates those dunes. You might consider assigning someone to help with aspects of the event so you can focus on other things.
You can call on other previous event organizers to see how they did it. You can do it like them, or do it completely different.
I think its important to protect yourself as well. Consider the legal ramifications of holding such an event. In other words, if you charge money for the event, and have official starters, then you may be legally responsible if somone gets hurt at one of the events that you organize. It seems to me, the more organized it is, admission fees, starters, the more insurance you need. Im not an attorney, so I cant help you with that one.
Hopefully others will give thier opinion on this as well.

I was asked what the possible responsibilities were so I posted them. Like I said, "There is no set of rules for this or any particular way that you have to do it. ". You can make it whatever way you want. If you want it like its been done in the past, for example, just show up and have a great time, thats actually my favorite. Let me make this crystal clear again, if you get voted on it, you can do whatever way you want to do it. Also, there is no need to panic, afterall, that's why we are having this discussion. We've always had someone to help organize it in some way. Someone to give us directions, and the local rules. If thats all you want, very good. Because nobody will be disapointed when you say thats how you will do it. Yes, there were people that will always be disapointed, but its usually when they go and its something that they didnt expect.
Let me know if you want your name removed, I'm happy to do it, and I wouldnt blame you one bit. I dont care what you do, im just here to make the voting fair.

We will show you some good places to drag and the Drag hill. but other than that it is up to the racers if they want that. I am not a racer. I just want to get together with friends and have a good time. Like it has always been.
Thanks

I didnt even have you down for someone interested in organizing it. Did you want to do that? Also, as I mentioned to SST, if you are the organizer and you want to do it, you can have it as simple as you want. My advice, just let everyone know what the get together will be like so they know what to expect. There are people that want a racing event, there are some that dont. I think they may have some weight on how they vote. For the last three years we've had someone volunteer to do this. If nobody wants to, I'd be happy to to eliminate names. The only problem is that if someone wants to organize it, and someone does not, then you have a problem - Too many chefs in the kitchen. By having one leader, they can make the decisions, or no decisions at all. This way, everyone stays at the same camp, enjoys the same fire, among other things. If not, then you may end up with separate groups - and im not sure that would be historically what we've done. But, the vote can reflect that if thats what people want. I enjoyed this event because jed was the ringleader. Im not sure how it would have turned out had there not been chosesn a leader. But we sure can find out next year if thats what people want.
