In the Sand....

lol, what is alot on the race hills in Oregon? The hills are short enough here that the DS has to overcome its own weight with a lot of extra power since the hole shot is so important. On longer hills the hole shot isn't near as critical. I ran a stock bore DS before I met HPR that was about 60 hp and I was about dead even with piped YFZ450's and piped Banshee's. I would gain on the face but only to make up getting out of the hole slower. My build was similar to the following with the exception of the piston, which was a TVI that was much more expensive and the carb. I had a Lectron 46. I didn't have NOS either but it seemed like an appropriate upgrade if he wants to run with the Banshee's that are actually marginally quick, lol.
Pipe - $250
paddles - $300
+4 swingarm - $450
longer brake line - $30
Chain & Sprockets - $120
Web 109 Cams - $250
Shim under kit - $350
12:1 Piston - $160
Ported intake - $90
Head Porting - $600
1mm oversized valves - $175
Seats & Valve job - $180
2 Valve guides - $30
Hardened Head studs - $40
Head Gasket - $30
TM45 - $350
NOS system Installed - $1000
Oil & Filter - $30
Coolant - $10
Total parts: $4,445 (Will you do the labor yourself, or do you hire that out?........if hired add about $500)
Which parts would you guys pull out to get the budget down to $2500 without costing yourselves enough horsepower to lose to that Banshee on a steep hill?
Something else, my stock bore DS did much worse against 450's at St. A's than it did in Oregon. The reason was the elevation. It made the extra DS weight an even bigger problem since hp was down 15% or so at 5000 ft. The YFZ only lost about 6hp, I lost double digits........weight obviously remained unchanged.
Now if you really want a DS to rip..............naw, too much info for one night. Maybe another time, lol
Which do you ride more, Oregon dunes or St. A's?

Dont get me wrong I love the DS its a fun toy but you need to drop allot of coin to make lighter faster stronger and there are some amazingly fast stock bores and big bores out there, but for hill racing, speed, light weight and cheap HP go 2 stroke.
you can pick up at some great prices Banshee, Quadzilla, CR500 in a fourtrax aftermarket frame, convert it to alcohol on hang on!!!
I have a zilla making close to 78 HP just ported , carb, pipe, and a cut and rechambered head on 110 gas, my buddies Banshee is making close to 100 HP on alcohol.
Just my thoughts ERBE.

It is true that 2500 will get you a fast DS if spent wisely but you do have to start off realizing that you are working with a very heavy quad. You could buy a good used DS for about 3000 and spend another 3000 in mods and really have a reliable duner that makes a very good showing at the drag hill.If you want a DS that will always make a respectable showing at the drag hill and that will walk all over a piped and jetted banshee you can get that done for 2500 for sure.If you are expecting to always be the first to the top of the hill with a DS and 2500 in mods you will be disappointed for sure.
