Clairification on weight loss for '00 DS
#1
I have done a ton of reading about this weight loss stuff for the DS. It looks like cutting the basics (fenders, taillight, skids, etc..) is good, but the money seems to be in rotating mass. Now I looked up the part numbers for the 00 and the 03 rear sprocket hub on bike bandit and they show the same number. My under standing was that the 03 was alum. and the 00 is steel. I'm also wondering if the aluminum wheel hubs of the newer models would be any better than cut down steel hubs from my year model. I'm running a 14 tooth front and a 37 tooth alum. 530 chain setup, would the 520 really make that much difference? Any clairification and input would be greatly apperciated.

Yes, putting a 520 conversion on your bike will help a lot, I put the sidewinder kit on mine. Your hubs should be aluminum, mine were, have them shaved down and also have the rear one's bolt pattern changed to Yam or Honda to run 8" wheels. Also look into an Ace swingarm, they are kind of spendy but worth the money. If you can afford it look into a lighter rear axle.

What all does it take to switch to a newer swingarm? will my 00 axle and carrier work with a newer swinger? My main plans were to have the hubs lightened, change out the sprocket hub and possibly do the 520 conversion. I'm still not a 100% sure if the 04 stuff will just bolt on with no modification. Mainly the sprocket hub is what I'm talking about. I would like to have a newer lighter swinger, and the way I understand it is that they are also shorter by an inch, which would help me out when I hit the track. Is there any year swinger that will bolt on and except my current axle, etc...?

I used a +5 Ace off of an 03 with no problem, so that should not be a problem with other yrs fitting. All the hubs and carriers seem to fit no problem, the 520 conversion will help a bunch. The 04 is an inch shorter, but it will make it weelie happy, and that's ok you just need to get used to it.

Have the front hubs also turned down, the 04 alum brake hub helps, I went with the ASR upper a arms better handling and lighter than stock, there was 1 rear that the DS had Alum upper A arms, im looking into alum replacement pcs fro the DS from steel, Motor Mounts, brackets, titanium bolts, like to see the DS down to 425, Sandbomer has been able to lighten a stock frame to nothing.
