The motor this was derived from makes 140hp stock in twin form. There is a lot of power to be made with this bad boy....

so nut, how long do you think if geared properly this motor will last if you run it all the way up the hil at 11,000 rpms or so? its a 450cc single . if it was a 4 cylinder it would be an 1800cc motor. would you run an 1800cc 4 cylinder motor at 11000 rpm an call that its sweet spot and expect it to last? any idea what piston speed would be?</end quote></div>
I thought we were talking about horsepower and its ability to make speed on the hill...
Do you want to talk about reliability instead now?
This is a very short stroke motor which makes for a lot less piston speed at rpm. All this motor has to do is last 130 hrs on the topend to be easily competetive in the class.
Honda asks you to replace the rings at 30 - 40 hrs, do they not? What rpm's are people turning the honda and what is it's stroke compared to the DS450?

So to change that top spark plug in the middle of the engine will you have to pull off the gas tank to get to it?</end quote></div>
yes, which is exactly what you do on the DS650. you got the tank off for the routine valve adjustment check anyway, and no need to swap the plug any more often than you do that.

That's the Epic Racing/Can-Am DS 450 factory bike. Not 100% Finished but you get the idea.

SST, The reliability of this motor will have to be seen but I won't be betting against Rotax or BRP.
Do you realize that essentially this same bore and stroke is used in Ducati, Honda, and Suzuki v-twins all running 10,000rpm on up rev limiters. These are streetbike motors meant for 10s of thousands of miles without tear down.
How about Honda V-tec? 9000RPM redline!
I don't believe a bunch of 6'5" 300lb DS650 riders will be flocking to this 450. It obviously wasn't meant as a replacement for the DS.
I do think this machine will be a contender if not the main choice of the 450 crowd. BRP has one upped the competition.
Personally, I'm alittle disapointed by this bike, I was really hoping for the 550 Aprilia V-twin. Supposedly ATK is considering a quad with this motor. They were behind the development of the DS650 so there's some hope there.

WOW!!! negative vibes.........Seems like people are just hung on the ds650 to except anything new Its a no brainer that the 450 was not ment to replace the ds650 so why do so many compare to the 650? This whole talk about revs and engine life have been around since the 450 came out. All you have to do is look around you at the dunes and watch the 450 run ....stock or moded.
I really love my yami 450 its the fastes bike i have ever had and did not cost 10,000 to do it. These are only my opinions and are not intended to butt hurt no one

Only other thing I would be looking for is reverse. I was planning on trading the DS650 for a 450 kawi or possibly the DS450. But I did notice that Can-am website does not have a 650 anymore. Maybe I missed it, but if the 650 is no longer availible new I think I will hang on to mine for a second quad because I do love it in the sand. Also I know the majority of guys on here are big guys so it looks like yamaha may win over the 650 crowd by default to the 700. Which I believe is a good quad, and would consider myself for my next quad.
