Default DS 650 on a diet

Anyone tell me is there anyway of getting the weight down on the DS things I can remove or dont need? What is the best bang for the buck? I have OMR mods to carb, K&N no lid, rev box, Yosh slip-on. I want to get in to sand drags with it. Where are you guys getting them 520 chain kits? I know renthal just come out with one for 300$ is there an alternative?? What gearing is best for 300ft drags? I have stock gearing and launch in 2nd now with Holeshots 20x10x10.

Any help will be really appreciated no one around where I live knows nothing about these things not even the dealer....

THANKS

Well you could get yourself the lightened hubs or have them machined, 520 chain conversion, if it is an 04 you won't need lighter a arms, but if it isn't get lighter a arms like LSR I belive they are chromoly...Get rid of the airbox...You can do upgrades to the engine and make her perform better, not sure if HPR is still having problems or you could go to RW racing or the bomb...As for gearing I have a 15 front sprocket up front and am really thinking about doing a conversion bike, but have to figure out if I want it a full time drag bike or a sleeper.

I have just weighed my 2000 DS and its right at 470Lbs with the 5 gallon IMS tank full. I was disappointed.

This is wet and ready for the sand with the double buffs, and sand front tires on black label wheels, half cut rear fenders, aluminum rear grab bar, the front bumper replaced with just a grab handle, cut hubs, aluminum sprocket hub, no heel guards and a 520 conversion.

If you are going to be sand draging your bike the first thing you need to do is get rid of your 20" paddles and go with some 22" paddles and depending on what you do to your motor maybe go bigger on my 650 motor I was running 25" 9 paddle extremes and it would launch hard out of the hole when I was running smaller tires I had to play catch up after going to larger tires I was launching with the light bikes and some of them were playing catch up. I would do all of the mods you are going to do then get with a good tire guy or some of the guys on this forum and figure out the rite tire and paddle combo for your build it makes a day and night differance.
Good Luck on your build.

Yea 520 kit. I got the sprockets from Wood racing and the chain through my dealer. Go aluminum on bumper, grab bar and handle bars. I would ditch the air box and go with a clamp on K&N. Get a +4 swingarm and some 22 triple buffs from Skat Trak. If you upgrade the carb to say a TM you will love running her on methanol. Its safe and makes a big difference especially when its hot outside.

A couple of other weight saving items that I did back when I had a DS 650...

Lose the front fenders and brackets, the headlight, tail light, and their wiring harnesses. Lose the airbox and the air ducts that draw air from under the gas tank cover. You've already changed to a lighter exhaust. An aluminum rear grab bar, and no front bumper helps. Remove the heel gaurds and trim the rear fenders so they don't flop like big bird wings. AC pro peg nerfs come with great aluminum foot pegs, and for sand drags you could cut the nerfs off and just use the light weight aluminum foot pegs.
