Can the stock DS650 stator handle a 165 watt light set?
i am looking at fabbing up a light set using 3 hella 55 watt lights and a light bar that would mount on my aftermarket armadillo front bumper.
i have never had any more wattage than stock on mine, and i wanted to hear from those of you running aftermarket stuff
can the stock stator handle the stock lights and needs of the bike, and an extra 165 watts without draining the battery?
thanks

I've been running two 55w lights in by baja light kit, along with a 65w in the main headlight, on my '01 ds for years and it handles it perfectly fine, but I do not know if adding a 3rd 55w like you propose would be an issue or not.
If you don't get a solid answer on this question, I say go for it, and if you have charging issues as a result then you can step the 3 lights down to 35w bulbs and be fine, while still having the broad span aiming of 3 additional lights.
Be sure to fuse the added lights seperately from the main stock beam, so that if issue develops you don't lose all lighting simultaneously. Its also nice to switch them seperately too, so when you pull into camp you can shut off the added lights but still have main beam on low so you don't offend the whole campground. There is room on the dashboard to add a lighted rocker switch of your choosing.

but i like pulling into camp and being offensive!!
lol
thanks hightower...ill post some pics up when i get it going. I actually got the idea from a guy i bought a light set from for my ranger. three hella 55 watters....the ranger has a 500 w stator, so no problems there......
mathematically, one would assume the DS could handle it....we'll see

You're offensive without even pulling into camp!
He doesn't come on here any more but if you remember, Johnnyairtime had a massive light set up on his DS. It was like two eight in PIAA's. Don't know what wattage but it had to be big. I know several members have had their stators rewound to boost the output, BigRay is running some serious lights.
You coming to Dumont the second weekend of December? Gonna be a good showing DS's there, and mine will be running much better thanks to Hightower!!!

The ds650 stator is one of the biggest atv's make. Most bikes have a 120-180 stator, the DS650 has a 260. I know because I'm trying to find a stator pickup assembley, from a aftermarket level, and so I tried to see if I can upgrade my stator, and well to no avail. No aftermarket out there for the DS650, and Can-am brp are on back order with there stator. good luck Tiger
