Did you put the jets back in the proper place when you cleaned the carb? It will idle with them in wrong but backfire when given any throttle.

the battery is about 6 to 8 months old. I am assuming its still good. put charger to it, did not need any time on the charger. however did not get it load tested.

Default backfiring ds 650

I just bought a 01 DS650 and drove it about 10hrs now and now am having the exact same problems. It was running fine, I was headed acros the frozen lake when all of a sudden it just bogged now it is doing exactly what this guys ds is doing. The battery is fine but needs charger and starts right up, without charger the starter solinoid just clicks fast. The solanoid terminals were wet and frozen so I cleaned the battery and all terminals thinking this would solve the problem but noluck. It idles fine but when I crack the throttle the thing starts missing and backfires and tach goes crazy. Wierd. I was thinking maybe the solanoid is corroded and it not letting enough voltage thru the ignition system thus causeing the missing and all problems. Just a theory IDK. Ill see if replacing solanoid will fix problem.
Anyother solutions please.

Check your rectifier, if it has taken a dump and is frying your cdi it will run like you are describing. Does your DS ,either of them, have an aftermarket cdi? If so what kind? If it is not a good name brand it may have taken out the rectifier, had it happen to me 3yrs ago.
