Default i need some help....PLEASE!

went riding this weekend with my 02 ds baja and late in the day after some hard trail riding she started cutting out, like she was stalling. i shut it off and that was it, almost. the fan was making some strange noises but wouldnt run and she wouldnt turn over. after a minute it came out of it and all went back to normal. started off again and again it started cutting out. stopped it again and that was definitly it. nothing now. it certainly seems electrical but dont know where i should start looking....help please!

Does this bike have a safety feature that shuts it off the engine ( ignition ) when it overheats? If the cooling system if not working properly; (perhaps the funny sound the fan was making is a clue) then the engine temp could be very near the shut-off temp. As it bumps the high temp threshold the engine could run rough then shut off. When it drops slightly then the engine would run.

This theory would be reinforced if the engine ran OK when you were moving, which would help cool the engine, and if it shut off when you were stopped or going slow, which would make the engine hotter.

I would check the fan. It could be obstructed or the shaft in the middle might be spinning but the fan slipping on the shaft and not reaching the right RPM.

Hope that helps.

It's not gonna be cheap, but you need a rectifier my friend. Probably wouldn't hurt to get a new battery also. Mine did this very thing 3 yrs ago from a cheap rev box that took the rectifier out along with 2 batteries. They usually run about $150 or so, hope this helps.

Check here for cheap prices

Start with the simple stuff.

Are the connections on the battery tight? They easily work loose.

The fuses under the seat can also get a little loose. Over time, the fuse honder doesn't pinch in on the fuse the way it once did.

Check to see that your ground connection is still solid, etc.

All of my problems have been related to something simple like above but, check out what Cynic has to say as well. He's got some great experience.

Follow the wires that go to it, at the connector from the rectifier, unplug it and check voltage, it should be putting out 12v, if it is way more or none the rectifier is cooked.

Or, with key off the battery should read around 12.25, key on hit start button, should draw down to around 9.25, then when it starts it should be running 14.25 at the battery.
Cynick, is your method with the bike running? Would assume so. Just checking, it's been awhile since I did what you suggested. I do remember doing it that way though, you probably do to, when we all tag teamed my dead DS up at Little Sahara. Fun times!lol

just back from vaca, and back to my issues. i cant start it due to the battery being flat and my charger being lent out. so in the meantime i was wondering what else could be the issue. is there any real possibility that it could be anything else? if it is the rectifier could it have damaged anything else while it was crapping the bed? is there any way to test it with the machine off?
