Yep that's stock. Wow, maybe your carb is not running right or something. 66 is way slower than you should be, you should be over that in 4th gear. There's definitely a problem going on somewhere. What size rear tires are you running? 22" tires will give you a lot more top end and are way better for the DS anyway.

I'm running 21's for now. I would guess that the 22's would add a little to the top end but not too much. I'll have to check the spark plug to see if it's to lean or rich. Also, maybe i should put in a dyno jet. BTW, 66 mph at 8000rpms and plenty of room left on the throttle. I mean, once I reach top speed there is lot's of room left in the throttle. I am baffeled.

 

To add insult to injury, my racing teammate just got an 05 Baja DS650. It's got aftermarket +1 front a-arms, +1 rear axel, desert gas tank, big gun rev box and a twist throttle. Basically the same bike except his is a Baja and mine is not. We tested the two bikes next to each other yesterday. Maxed out in 5th on my bike was about 66. He walked away from me - at least 12 to 15 mph faster. Up to 3rd gear we were identicle both in RPMs and MPHs

I haven't jetted it yet, but intend to soon. Does anyone know if the Baja setup weighs significantly less than the standard DS? Should it be that much faster?

What do you guys think?

 

I found out that his DS is about 20lbs heavier. That's not it. I am jetting it this week and getting a leak test done to see if there is a top end problem starting to occur. I also found a 39 tooth rear sprocket. I was wondering if that will speed things up a bit.

 

It shouldn't be a gearing problem at all. You need to have the other things looked at for sure.

 

Sounds to me like your jetting is just off on your main jet. That can kill your top speed a lot. There could be some other issues causing a problem. I would start with your Jetting though and see if that fixes it. Get all the way to your top speed, pull the clutch and kill it at that RPM. then check you plug and adjust from there........

 

whats the difference with changing a front or rear sprocket?
I want to get a little more low end power for my daughters baja 90 and was thinking about changing the rear sprocket to a smaller one, and removing a link in the chain??

It's inverse. If you want more bottom end power for your daughters quad you need to go UP on the rear sprocket not down. Or you can go down on the front sprocket. Your choice. The rear will give you a finer adjustment. The front is very course adjustment. Around 3 to 1 depending. You can do the math to be exact if you want.
