you might also need to replace your thermostat and flush your rad, also make sure your air screw is adjusted right if it is running rich/lean it will run hot . if it is running hot enough to push water out around houses, ect. you should replace the head gasket , it might be leaking a little , which will cause it to run hot, did it seem to use alot of water?

the thermostat is located to the right of the spark plug's there is a hose coming from the rad to the head pull the hose and the piece it clamps to houses the thermostat. the air screw is located under the carb in the middle towards the front
it is a straight slot [up in the hole] , right where the carb meet's the rubber boot. to adjust , let it warm up , while idleing turn the screw in till it start's to miss , turn it back out counting turn's until it starts to miss again , set the screw exactly between these to points, readjust idle if it rose, recheck adjustment if jou adjusted the idle.
you should also drop the bowl off the carb and make sure you have a 45 pilot jet not the 40 they used sometimes, also make sure your main jet is correct for your altitude. i also run one of them inline cooler's in that hose from rad to head.

Not sure if this will help you but... I just spent about a month resolving my overheating issues...... on my 04 DS650 X. That darn light kept coming on. Last time it was 32 degrees outside.... This thing is made for desert racing!
1. The radiator was plugged with mud. I need to clean better around where the frame meets the radiator and also the fan area. The outside looked ok.. The best way to tell if it clean is to see light through the radiator everywhere. Hold a light up to it and look from the back. Make sure you push any mud out the front. (the way it came in) and be careful with the cooling fins. None should be bent. Spent about an hour on those buggers..
2. The switch was bad that turned the fan on. At 210 degrees you should be at 1 ohms. It read 266K! Sounds like yours is bad... Like 35 dollars to replace
3. Whoever put the thermostat in.. Their is a washer that is supposed to be between the thermostat and the housing to push it back towards the engine. Someone put it between the thermostat and the engine. Thus never creating a good flow
4. I have a Big Gun pipe and checked with them to verify proper jetting. My plugs always looked chocolate brown.
I bought an inline gauge to monitor the temp... I didn't want any wires or anything up top. I also felt like I would look at all the time (staring at it while hitting a tree) and have it break when the darn thing rolls over. At one point it went to 225 and the head pipe started getting red... That was before I resolved the issue. Let me know and I will get you the info on it. I also used one of those temp guns with the Laser Light. I was able to watch the flow throughout the system. I even saw when the thermostat opened and watched the coolant cool down while going through the radiator. They are now under 40 dollars from places like Northern Tool
Now the fan comes on at 210 runs for awhile and goes back to 190ish... I had it idle for 20 min and watched the process 3 times.... Never did that since I owned it....
Also, my radiator seemed to leak while running very hot. I pressure tested and it kept 14LBS for over an hour... I can send you pictures on how to test real cheap incase you don't have a radiator shop near by.
Also, if you look on Ebay you can buy a manual in PDF form for around 16 Dollars + shipping. It will show you the proper way to fill the system so not to get air bubbles. Best investment I have made so far...
Good Luck!
