they were fast back in the air cooled era. when two strokes were made to be reliable, funny old suzuki's can ams ect seemed to run for years with minimal maitinence , i wanted a can am sonic 500 in the early 80's "4 stroke". bought a yz 490, great bike once modified. but water cooled two strokes dont lose power when they get warmed up. my air cooled bike's had a wide power band and made great trail bike's. but my cr 500 would walk away from it in a race. not to mention suspension . old can ams were race ready back in the day. and it still shows in there sleds, watercrafts, atvs ect. check out a vintage race , im sure you'll see a couple there.

Had an '85 Can-Am ASE 500 and an '84 Can-Am MX 500 with rotax two strokes in them. Enjoyed the heck out of them, especially liked watching my buddies trying to left side kick start a big bore two stroke (very entertaining). They were both reliable and powerful for there day. I have a 2000 liquid cooled KX 500 now and like 68 said, the old air cooled two strokes won't stay with the newer KX and CR 500's. Your dad was right, they were great old bikes.
