Default Need help diagnosing DS650 issue

My '01 fouled just one plug recently and has been dying out on me as well. I'll putt around and seems when I speed up she will just cut out & stall. Runs a bit rough at times as well. She always fires right back up. The idle is also erratic at times. I was thinking a bad coil or coil ground? Thanks!

In the spark plug boots there is a screwed in insert with a cross wire.
When you put a spare plug into the boot, does the insert hold the plug or does it fall out. If cannot hold, then replace insert. When screwing out insert, be careful not to loose a spring and resistor.

The insert seems to hold the plug when I had both plugs out of the head but in the boots to visually inspect the firing. Odd thing was that the plug that fouled seemed to have a stronger spark?

Ok, checked both boots and all seems well in there but what are those fuse looking things between the screw & spring anyway? Any other ideas? CDI? I have had the RWR CDI in there since she was new. I went ahead & ordered new coils, wires & boots just to check that off the list.

When the DS first came into the country it did not have resistor spark plugs, so the insert on top of the boot is a resistor. You can run without them.

I would check the float height also in your carb. To see a good spark off motor at idle is good. All your grounds are tight and clean?

Just take it one step at a time.

Well, I should mention that it is a full 730 race build with 48mm Lectron so at least the float was easy to check with the transparent float bowl. I'll have to take a peek at the grounds.

Hmm, hadn't thought of that. I have the 5 gal. IMS with a shorty tube & one way vent but I guess it could be gummed up, I'll check that. Thanks. Any other ideas?

I had a problem with mine along time ago. What happened was the choke got stuck open and fouled out my plugs. Something to look into. When it happened, it ran really ruff and had no power.

Update: turned out to be a bad coil as I suspected, installed two new ones and BAM, runs perfect. Amazing how much power ya make when both plugs are firing!
