BRP recalls ATVs due to loss of steering control

The following product safety recall was voluntarily conducted by the firm in cooperation with the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission. Consumers should stop using the product immediately unless otherwise instructed.
Name of Product: Model Year 2010 Can-Am ATVs
Units: About 2,400
Distributor: BRP U.S. Inc., of Sturtevant, Wis.
Hazard: The dynamic power steering can fail, resulting in the sudden loss of steering control. This poses a risk of injury or death to riders.
Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received one incident report with no injury no material damages.
Description: The recall involves Model Year 2010 Can-Am Outlander and Renegade ATVs. The following models are affected by this recall and can be located on the side panels:

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using these vehicles and contact any Can-Am dealer to schedule a free repair. Consumers are being sent a direct notice from BRP.

It's nothing more than a programming change...they hook it upto the computer and upload an update basically.
From what I understand before the update if some component of the DPS was shorted to ground it would steer left,after the update if the short occurs the DPS will be disabled.
BRP has been mailing out the letters for over a week now...one reported incident with no injuries(in other words they didn't have to recall or notify CPSC)...but they did,and they are notifying owners themselves instead of relying on dealers to do it.
I know a manufacturer that should take note on how to respond to a possible safety issue!
