03 Can Am DS 650 dead while riding
Just bought an 03 DS 650 today.
Started right up when i tested it at the guys house 2x, then road it on my street and it was fine. Then i rode it from my house onto trails no problem.
Then before it wouldnt start i was riding in 4th gear and quickly pulled the clutch/brake/ and shifted into first and it jsut died.
Then it was just completely dead, like the battery was dead. No lights no ignition, nothing.
So we tried to bump start it, it kinda fired once, but after that the tires would just skid out on the gravel.
So we hauled it out by truck.
I know the problem is something electrical from the battery or instrument panel. Like a fuse/unplugged wire.
Anyone have any suggestions / experience this before?
i really want to get my 'new' quad running again.
Thanks

These quads require a healthy charged battery to run. Even if you get it started by other means, it will not run without a charged battery. Check the battery first. It should show high 12's on the voltage with it NOT running. IF the voltage is low, use jumper cables and hook up a good battery. If it starts, than measure the charging voltage. It should be ~14.5. I think anything over 14.6V indicates the rectifier is bad. These quads also had a bad habit of the wires to the recitifier falling apart. The harness that goes into the rectifier is not secured very well, and after years of bouncing along the trails, the wires start to break where they enter the rectifier. IF these wires are bad, it won't charge or chage intermittently. If one wire is frayed and loose, you might be able to solder it back to gether. If two wires are losse, and the short out against each other, it will fry the recitifier.
The rectifier is bolted to the inside frame on the other side of the battery. It will have cooling fins.
If the wires to the recitifier are the problem, the use some extra cable ties to rsecure the wires when replacing it.
