SICK OF IT

After sitting the whole winter pouring over 7 thousand dollars into my DS, it finally warms up to 50 degrees and guess what, the POS won't start. This is the worst cold starting bike I have ever had. With choke all the way on the bike will pop once and that is it, then wait a minute and it does the same thing. This goes on for half an hour. I have stock carb with dyno jet kit. I am so fed up. I would like a Fast by Gast Lectron carb. I used to race with these carbs on other bikes and they are nice. Will this help with starting. It is getting great spark, the battery is fully charged, and getting gas.

Jabomb Try a new battery and new plugs I am looking in too Odyssey Drycell batterys cost a lot more around $150 to $180 I think. They due have more cranking power. They have more ampes 300A at 32 degrees F the stock on have I think 250 at 80 degrees F. http://www.odysseyfactory.com/

Cold start popping is a lean condition. The pilot 2000 OEM pilot jet may be too small and/or the pilot screw under the carb not set rich enough. When I put on an exhust system, the jetting was too lean off idle, so increasing the pilot jet and/or riching pilot screw was needed for maximum power off idle. I have had problems with the choke mechanism itself, so you might want to take the choke lever apart. When these problems occur, have you tried increasing the idle screw to help get the motor running?
How much spark are you getting. The coils tend to be not grounded very well, so tighthening the coil mounting bolts and/or filing away frame paint will increase spark. Are the plug caps screwed in tight?

I have checked all grounds and they are all tight. I have increased the pilot jet. It starts great when its hot out. When I said it pops I meant it tries to start, not a backfire. I think I will look at the choke because it is real hard to pull out. Thanks for the info.

Well, my Cannondale is pretty hard to start when it's cold being fuel injected and all and when I leave a heater blowing on it for a little while before I ride, it starts right up. When I just try to start it with out the heater it takes a little while. Then again, DSWolf says he doesn't have problems starting when it's cold so I don't know... just a suggestion though, it never hurts to try.

jbomb,
Are you hitting the throttle?
The reason I ask is my DS is hard to start too. I would choke it & hit start it fired & then I'd gas it & it would die out. Finally I just fully choked it, hit the starter & DID NOT touch the gas. It fired right up!
That was how my Scrambler 400 was too. In fact, for all the flack Polaris gets the Scrambler started no matter what the temp was.

When I first tried starting my DS in the cold, I filed a set of plugs, so the dealer told me to pull the choke all the way out, then hold the gas about 1/4 throttle and hit the starter, it should fire right up. then let it sit for about 1 min and push the choke down to the first notch and let it sit for about 2 more min. thats how I've been starting mine since about the beginning of December and it starts right up every time.
