piston and cams question?
#33
Knutz- piped, hi-comp piston, air box mods, cams, stoke bore. Approx how much hp? 50 hp? What does your 760 produce on the dyno? I have seen in numerous post that your bike is not as strong as jeff's 760. What are the differences? Thanks.

14mins, I cannot speak for knutz, but the info I was emailed quite a while back from him had his kits and hp and torque numbers.
The first kit which is basically a high comp piston some machine work and a carburetor kit says in the email that it puts out 56hp and 44ft/pd of torque.
The 703 says 66hp and 48 torque. I did not look at the 760.
I am guessing these numbers are probably crank hp. Also take into account that these kits do not include cams.
I am guessing that with the piston cams and carb that it would be between these numbers. I would guess close to 60 hp. I may be way off base and knutz may be able to give us better figures.
Knutz have you ever dynoed a setup like I would like to do?
I would hope that it would work well, but maybe not. I am waiting to hear back from knutz and I would love to do this sometime very soon.

Hey Bat I am in the same boat you are I think. I've got the big gun pipe, pami CDI and kn jet and now I think I want to change the valve springs before I get the valves adjusted and maybe change the clutch springs too. Maybe I'll watch you and see how things turn out if that's ok. Let me know abou your progress goes....

Just a good pipe and good filter will get you 50 hp right? Stock is low to mid 40's I would think that the pipe is good for at least 5 hp and the carb filter, I think Knutz said that it picked up 3 hp. So that combo is over 50 hp.

Bigjon, yeah you can wait and see if you want. I am not sure what the best route is. I want to be up in power. I don't know where to stop. I know that I cannot afford the 703, but I think with high comp piston, cams and the right carb and of course tuned in right that it would be a nice package with a nice power increase.
I wish I could find someone who has done this. I would overnight a money order to have the parts overnighted to me, if the price was right. I just would like to have a good idea of how much power.
I don't know how all these numbers are measured, for instance the numbers that are stated on the email I got, say 66 hp for the 703. I don't know if this is just with the mods that come in that kit, or if it is with an exhaust and carb mount filter. These are not in the kit. I am guessing that it is with these. I don't know.
I also do not know if these numbers were measured at the crank or rear wheel hp. I am guessing crank, but again I don't know.
I would guess with the carb mount and a good exhaust that the Ds is probably about 48 hp, but again that is a guess. You have to remember that mods hp numbers are not cumulative. You cannot say that big gun says you get 6 hp and knutz says you get 3 more with the carb mount filter so the combo must give me 9hp. That may or may not be the case. I would guess that you would get somewhere in between the high and low.
Anyway, if I can get the parts and put this package together I will and I will see how it performs. I would love to have the parts by this weekend and spend the weekend in the shop putting it all together. I would love to be able to be tuning this all in next week. I am not sure what carb knutz will reccomend, and am anxiously awaiting his email to find out. I also don't know what all this will cost, and am waiting to find this out also.
I have the bug and am not sure when I will stop. I will let you all know.

Bat and Hurycne- Looked at the november 2001 dirtwheels- This is from the article, things may have changed,
Stage 1- 1342.00 dollars Kit includes hi- comp piston, special jets, cdi, heavy duty clutch springs all gaskets and labor. Hp 48 (stock is 41-43)
This kit is 70.00 dollars cheaper than Rw stage 1
For 2382 kit 2 will bump the ds hp level to 56 and engine displacement to 703.
Kit 2 is within 200 of ron woods #2 kit
Team Pami 5320.oo dollar 760 kit 66 hp.
This kit is 1500.00 more than ron woods #3 but is 10 more hp than ron woods.
Then there is Jeff's 760.......
Was that Jeff's bike in the article?
The article also stated that the 760 they were testing outran the built up quadracer500 dirtwheels had tested, and brought along.

14mins, I used to have that mag, but don't anymore. I will take your word for the numbers.
In the email that I have it shows the basic kit at 56hp, the 703 at 66hp and the 760 at 77 hp. I am not sure who is correct. We all know about those mag guys and how they report. Anyway not to get into all that stuff. Maybe one is reporting actual rwhp compared to the other hp at the crank. Maybe knutz can give us the info on how these numbers were reached and who is correct.
Marky, I am not sure what exhaust they are using to get these numbers either and am trying to find out. I would like to know what I could get out of doing piston, cams, and the right carb with the big gun exhaust woods cdi and carb mount air filter. I hope to find the answers sometime soon.
Anyone.........
Thanks

I figured out that you can find anything you want in a mag if you look long enough for example:
September 2001 the Raptor is dynoed at 43.1 hp at the wheels
but when the shoot out came in Feb 2002 it had 35.6 hp at the wheels. But where did the other 7.5 horses go? Out to the pasture? I know different dynos read different ways but Im sure a big time publisher like hi torque would at least be consistant. 7.5 hp is a 20% range based on the lower number. As for the Ds and other quads the best thing to do is become GOOD friends with the man at the dyno so he will let yu run for free.
