Sevenac,
Please pardon my ignorance, but what do you mean by "shave the head"? Is that the same as porting the intake manifold? If not, then is porting the intake and "shaving the head" a good combination of mods? Does shaving the head remove power on the high end, or just add to the low end? What about porting the intake manifold? Where does that add power?

Shaving/Decking the head means removing material from the deck of the head in order to raise compression or lower the cc's of the combustion chamber. An increase of 1 point in compression is usually good for a 3% power increase. Your piston to valve clearance will decrease and if you float your valves you could have costly engine damage. Porting, when done right, can increase power throughout the band with most of the increase being in the upper rpms. It will also extend the powerband and even more so with a cam swap.

Your best bet for more low end is modifying the endcap and doing a sprocket change for more torque multiplication at the wheels. You'll enjoy both!

Rocky Mtn ATV has front and rear sprockets also. It looked like they only had the stock (40 tooth) rear, but they may have others if you call them. They list 14, 15, and 16 tooth fronts for less than half of what RWR is asking. I don't know anything about Titax as a sprocket maker and do not own any of their products, but I thought it was worth putting out there.

It is easier to go down 1 tooth on the front then to add to the rear. It takes about 3 more teeth in the back to equal 1 less tooth in the front, so it is easier and cheaper to go with 1 less tooth on the front. I have that on mine and it makes a noticeable difference.

shaving the head means to shave a couple hundreths of and inch off of the piston to gain more compression

<< shaving the head means to shave a couple hundreths of and inch off of the piston to gain more compression >>

actually, rockey was correct above. If you shave the piston, you would be increasing the combustion chamber size and therefore lowering compression.

Sprockets merely make it easier to get the power you currently have to the ground. To "get more bottom end" is to actually increase power output. First step is to flow more air, and make up for it with jetting.
If you're in water often, leave the lid on, but do put a K&N in it, with outerwear, and open up the exhaust with a decent slip-on exhaust. If you think you're gonna with internal mods later, get a full exhaust system. You will get several HP at the lower rpm's, undoubtedly.
