whats the closes dunes to san fran ?
In stead of hitting the dunes give Hollister Hills or Carnegie State Park a try. Hollister has a 1/2 mile flat track for ATV's thats alot of fun. The black diamond trails are very challenging for an ATV rider because they are set up for dirt bikes. There is only one real challenging hill. I consider myself as an agressive rookie on the quad.
Carnegie is much rougher terrain and many more challenging hills.
Both parks are about 110 miles away from down town San Francisco.
Hollister is due South and Carnegie is East of San Fran.
Have fun

BlueRap are you talking about the hill between the motocross track and the TT track?
Bombthreat187, If you are interested in going to Hollister give me a call when you get out here and we can hook up and go riding (650)738-2793 Jason. It's a great place, lots of trails and a atv track. You can ride there all day and not hit the same trail twice it's so big. Are you bringing your DS with you?

Hey, I'm in too.
As for the dunes.
Pismo is great with the ocean view and if you like riding trails you will enjoy riding the fence-line (not really a trail.)
Bad part about Pismo is there are no steep dunes. Longest dune is maybe 60'.
If you want to climb steep dunes the nearest would be Sand Mt., Nevada (about 5-1/2 hours.)
What kind of dune riding do you want to do? Pismo is great but, if you go there wanting to see what the DS can do you may be disappointed with the challenge it offers. Sand Mt. has steep dunes that the sand rolls down as you are going up. Very steep dunes that the DS power loves.
Carnegie can be fun for fire-road type trails. Haven't been to Hollister Hills yet.
Things are real dusty right now (I think it has been something like 5 or 6 months since our last rain) so the Sand is a better choice. Do you have paddle tires? If not, Pismo is probably the better sand choice since paddle tires are really not needed there.

Tahoe is fairly close to Sand Mt. We could pick it up on the way to Sand Mt.
When we going???
Sand Mt. does get cold this time of year. We are planning a Pismo trip for after X-mas to New Years. Ship it to SF if you will be out this time of year.
Tha weather is the only other variable. Sand Mt. is at 4000' elevation so Dec-Jan are pretty cold out there (40's and 50's in the day and 20's and 30's at night.)
Pismo is pretty consistant year round 65 day 40's night. The ocean keeps the temperature pretty consistant.
Let us know what months you will be out and we can offer suggestions from there.
I do think a trip to Sand Mt. is a MUST even if it is cold. Nothing like racing up th long steep dunes.
