Backfiring questions
#3
Kodiak,
In my limited experience with backfiring on the DS, the backfiring through the airbox is a result of an air leak between the air filter and the carb. Mine was spitting fire in the airbox direction until I found that the clamp holding the black intake tube to the carb was loose. My backfiring at the exhaust was caused by loose exhaust header bolts. Just my experience, hope it helps.

In general, (there are other causes) backfiring through the exhaust is caused by an air leak in the exhaust system. Backfiring through the carb is caused by a lean fuel mixture, ie; air leak in intake tract or improper jetting.

These are all good possabilities, problem is there is not enough info to make an informed diagnosis
To get in the ball park, a few questions..
Does it backfire (carb/exh) on acceleration?, while bogging? , at high RPMs?
Does it backfire (carb/exh)during deceleration?
Does it backfire (carb/exh)between shifts?
Any other mods then what you listed?
Did you adjust your valves after you put your head back on?
The answers are fairly easy if the info is there.

It used to backfire out of the exhaust when I was trying to start it, but I fixed that by tightening the header bolts. It still backfires once in awhile through the airbox when trying to start.

With the info here and from your other post in mind, I suggest you check your valve clearance.
This is always a good idea after a tear down especially if you havn't checked them before.
You may have an intake valve hanging open.
Clearance between cam and shim should be between .010 - .015mm

Been there done all that you answer is in the fuel air mixture. Possible rejetting and a new gas cap. Dealers are worthless. Mine back fired through the air box nothing worked Valves/air box breather holes/
timing checks/ fuel mixture adjustments/everything under the sun. What I found was when I put the trinity exhaust on there wasn't any header gaskets and I rejetted as well as removing the air box lid. It run great now still back fire when it lopes just a fuel mixture issue.
