Default DS50 help

Hopefully you guys can help me. My son has a '02 ds50 it has really good bottom end but seems to almost cut out at full throttle (kinda like the choke is on but it has an electronic choke). I've tore the exhaust off and the carb apart looking for some type of restrictor or rev limitor but cannot see one. I did find a restrictive washer in the intake. Removing that helped the bottom even more but still has the same choked feeling at full throttle. It is a two stroke and I've had many two stokes and they all rev up well. Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thx

Matt

I bought it from Redding Yamaha brand new. They told me the choke was electronic. I cannot see a choke on the carb anywhere. It has an electric start and always starts up well whether it's hot or cold. I live at around 1000 ft elevation. The cdi unit that one of you mentioned does sound like the culprit because otherwise the little quad has lots of go. Where can I buy one of those? I appreciate the speedy responses.

Ok, well for what it's worth. The site doe's not say that they have a electric choke, but it also doesn't clarify that it is manual. The interesting part though is that it is has a rev limiter, which I suspect to be the culprit in your case. Bombardier is notorious for setting to low of a rev limiter. Seeing as how its a youth model, there may be a way to by pass this limiter. As for the restrictor you removed, it will help alot. That is installed to just lower the performance lower and to keep the kids safe.

Thx for the info baja. If i knew for sure how to bypass the rev limiter I most certainly would but it runs fine and he will probably only use it for another year anyhow. Guess I'll live with the slow top speed. It's just kinda of a drag having to wait for him all the time because his quad is sooo slow I suppose it is a "kids" quad though. It was a good speed for the first five rides or so, but just like the rest of us, he needs a lil more now.

they have after market parts for the little engines maybe if you call one of them they could help you with what it is. just a note one of my friends got a polaris 50, same thing and it had no top end, they took it back to the dealer, apparently they ship with some kind of oil in the carb, they cleaned it out and it runs great now. his ran good on the low end also before they . took it in. who know they all come out of the same plant maybe this will help

I would try cleaning out the Carb Bowl. It should be very simple with the small motor and everything.

Are you sure the thumb throttle at the handle bar is going throught the full range of motion? Is there any adjustment screw set on the back of the thumb throttle? I have seen, especially with the Taiwanese quads, that they put a limiting screw with a lock nut on the back of the housing. It starts out screwed part way in, then as skill develops you can back the screw out more to allow more throttle movement. Just a thought...
