unscrew it most the way out ( not all the way) then turn kill switch to off, fill oil tank with correct amount of oil, turn the motor over til clean oil shoots out of the screw area ( messy) titen screw reinstall oil filter done!! look into the bleed system the 2001 and newer ds's have, then you wont have to do all this screwing around with bleeding the oil.

If you want to know a little easier way to do this without messing with the bleeder screw at all, listen up:
After you get your oil drained out of your motor and the tank leave the oil line off of the ENGINE. change your filter and put the cover back on. Now; hold the oil line straight up in the air, you don't have to pull up real hard just hold the opening up. Start pouring oil in slow while holding oil line upright. whach the level of the oil comming up to the top of the hose, I think you will have to pour in just over 1 quart. When the oil gets just about to the top of the oil line stop pouring oil in and put your thumb on top of the oil line hole.... so oil dont come out of it. Now just quick put it on the motor, you might spill a little oil on top of the motor but after a few times you will get good at this. Just wipe or blow it off with an air hose. tighten the clamp. Turn the kill switch OFF and turn it over a few times. Now dump the rest of the oil in and start it up. The oil light should be off or will turn off right away. Sounds confusing now but I think it's a lot easier and less messy. Hope this helps.

For some reason it allows enough oil to enter the engine without having to use the bleeder screw. I have tryed just dumping the oil in without leaving the hose off and no oil will get into the motor unless you use the bleeder screw. I find that too messy and a pain in the a$$. My way works and works well.

This method works good for me. The way I found out was when I first got my fourwheeler and doing the first oil change I couldn't get the bleeder screw loose. So I took the oil line off the engine when the tank was full and I spilled oil everywhere so I put the line back on quick and it worked. The next oil change I tryed the way your supposed to and I got the idea of doing what I do now. I like my way much better and it works good.
