What's Wrong With My Baja?
#1
I just got back from Sand Mountain, Nevada. This was the first real test of all the modifications I've performed on my DS (see my signature - also, I went down to a 15-tooth countersprocket). I had never been to Sand Mountain before, so I really didn't know what to expect. All of my previous sand dune riding experience has been in Oregon. I was hoping to see much better hill climbing performance. Needless to say, I was disappointed. Of course, the sand was much looser, and the hills were much, much steeper there than in Oregon, but I just didn't see a great difference. Any ideas? Am I expecting too much? Do you think I will see a significant improvement when I go back to Oregon? Are there any other modifications I should make? Thanks for your help!

Part of your let down may be due to your paddle tires that you are using. There is a good chance that you are just spinning the Maxxis Rooster Paddles. I noticed a big difference when I switched from sand sharks to skat-trak 9 paddle extremes.

hey thesorb. Did you change your jetting for sand mountain? Oregon dunes are at sea level and sand mountain is 4000ft plus. I bet you were running pretty rich. With my 00 DS at the oregon dunes i can run with my airbox lid on and my jetting is spot on but if i try to run with my airbox lid on at sand mtn it will pop and sputter and run wayyy rich. Once i take the airbox lid off it runs great. I am going to a 45mm carb before my first trip to sand mtn for the season so i hope it does well and i can get the jetting spot on. Also the sand is much softer at sand mtn then oregon dunes. The sand at oregon is much wetter and you have much more hookup even with dirt tires. At sand mtn for hillclimbing the only way to go are haulers. Sean

Go with Haulers..it is more than likely your sand tires those roosters arent just that great...it is either that or put your 16t sprocket back on w/those sand tires b/c you will spin more w/lower gearing..

My Roosters are of the v-paddle variety, and I want to stay with v-paddles. But I think I'll go with Sand Skate IIs. They always worked well on my Banshee. Do you think they'll work well on the DS?

I want to ensure that I understand you all - you're saying that my jetting was too rich for that elevation (Sand Mountain, NV) which in turn prevented my machine from performing well - is that correct? Please explain to me precisely how bad jetting affects performance (either too rich or too lean). I'm not trying to be a smart aleck - I really want to understand how this all works. Thanks!
