My fan used to run only when I road slow technical trails at low speed, but coolant temp never got over 205 unless fan died - which it did once. As long as I had air flowing through the radiator no fan was needed. Radiator shrouds do nothing at slow speed, and that's the only place I ever had temp issues.

Now that I put the TM45 on and jetted real fat on the bottom my coolant temp has not gotten even close to 200 yet, may not need the fan anymore! We'll see later this summer though, when it gets up over 100.

FYI - Fan should kick on at 204 degrees, but the red light doesn't come on until 239. Just because you don't get a red light without a fan doesn't necesarily mean you're not too hot.

 

When I put on my new headpipes I had to take the fan off. One of the spacers came out without me knowing while reinstalling and the shroud cinched up against the fan. Needless to say it wouldn't turn and I went riding on a hot day (this all happened last summer) and the fan wouldn't kick on. It kept blowing fuses under the seat and when the red light came on, I shut 'er down and had my buddy tow me back to the tool box. We fixed it, put in a new fuse and it's worked like a charm ever since. I wanted to ride so bad that day, I was about to hire a drunk midget to ride on my front bumper and **** in the radiator everytime the light came on. But I took the safe way out and didn't ride. Never can find a drunk midget when you need to.

 

I don't understand why everyone is having problems with their fan's. My 2000 DS still has the original fan, it still comes on once and a while, so I know it works.

I've rode in the Glamis dunes and rode hard all year including June, July, Aug. it's been up Four Peaks, rock crawling at the Coke Ovens and up to the Cinders in Flagstaff.

My jetting is spot on. Slightly rich to about 1/3rd throttle and 1/3 - 2/3 is good with 2/3 - full a little lean.

The only add on is some home made shrouds.

 

I guess that I should consider myself fortunate. I ride river bottoms and whoops all the time and haven't had any dead fans as of yet (knock on wood).
