Default SUNL Coil Problems

Sorry for this to be my first post but I am having some problems. I was recently given a SUNL 90cc quad in trade. I have purchased all the parts that were missing but I am having trouble with one. The coil which was missing when I got it is not obvious where to mount it. I presume the mounting hole is the ground or the green connection on the coil but I am unsure where it should be mounted and what wires to hook to it. I am probably going to be getting my volt meter out today and figuring out what the two random wires that are hooked to nothing are. (which I presume are the ones I need) Probably wont be too much of a problem but if someone could throw their input in on this or a picture of the coil location I would greatly appreciate it. Previous owner must have cut the wires that were connected to it because there are no ends on a green and a red wire. Coil has green and black ends. I am not 100% sure which is which. I can track the quad wires to where they go and probably identify each but identifying the ones on the coil requires me to have knowledge of the coil. Also looks to me that there is a wireless kill switch that is part of the wiring harness. Will it run without the remote? Or do I have to attempt to disect this from the wiring harness. Thanks again!

Come one someone has to have a SUNL willing to take a picture or describe to me where I should be mounting this coil. Whether the mounting hole is the ground or the green connector is the ground. Really would like to make this thing run and not damage my new parts.

Welcome to the forum Psned!

I dont think it matters much where the coil is mounted...the coil will be grounded as long as its mounted bare metal, not a painted surface. I would also ground the green wire..I disconnected the remote on my mini utility just to keep it from becoming a problem..

Thanks for the input! I figured this much but was really curious as to where it was originally. Only because I looked all over the thing and I just wanted to know out of frustration. Can I unplug the wireless kill switch and have it run without jumping the wires? I would think since its disconnected that a signal would not be allowed to pass through the box. Also I see people have a problem with the kill switch on the back. Again my same thought process is that this is a ground switch and when the switch is not being depressed the ground is broken. So splicing the two together and removing the switch in my mind is what I would do. Is this correct? How do you recommend I find the correct wire to connect to the black? Volt meter and turn it over and watch for surges in voltage?

Splicing the 2 wires together is what I did on my mini quad... I have never tried the crank the engine over and watch for surges but it makes sense to me.... How many wire choices do you have to hook the black wire to?

Is Sunl still in business? I would think they would have a wiring diagram if they are still around..

I tried some wiring diagrams and it was not clear cut. Example the wireless kill switch has 5 wires plugged into it. So which ones do I jump to bridge the connections? The back one is just two so its clear to me on that one. Tonight I will play around a little more and probably cut the wiring harness open more. Right now I have a green wire and a red wire that have not found a mate. I have a coil with a black connection and a green. In my car knowledge one goes to ground the other goes to the distributor. In this case I have to figure out which wire is acting as the distributor wire. In addition if the kill switch cuts the spark at the coil than one end might be spark the other kill switch and the hole the bolt goes through is ground. Grounds will be easy to find using continuity on my meter. But finding the signal (distributor wire) I suspect will require me to turn the engine over until I find the wire that is not constant.

Thanks for your help. Hopefully I will figure this out. Than I can put my H2 Power Wheels body on and go kart steering wheel and I will be off!

The part about putting a go cart steering wheel on a 90cc quad has me really confused. Ignoring that, are you still having problems?

I don't have a SUNL anything, but the wiring on chinese quads is usually pretty straightforward. The ignition coil is driven by the CDI. Do you have a 4 wire CDI or a 5 wire CDI? Here is a pic of a five wire CDI so you can get oriented:

Re: "Kill switch in the back": If you have a five wire CDI like the above picture then the kill switch(es) must all be open (not shorted) to get spark. If any of the kill switches are closed (contacts shorted together) you get no spark.

Thanks for your help. I have not managed to fix it yet. Still trying. The part about the steering wheel is they dont look good with quad handle bars when you are putting a body off a powerwheels on them.
