I bought a used 110cc engine to replace in my grandsons 4 wheeler. It is 3 forward and reverse. On top of the engine near the back is a rod sticking up out of the engine that will move up and down a little, what is this for?

Here you go. Look right below top frame. It is treaded on the end.

 

Thanks...Im thinking its maybe a gear indicator... Where if it had a N,1,2,3,R light the wires would hook to a switch? Does it move when you shift gears?

 

No sure yet. Just installed engine and had to rewire from 5 wire system to 4 wire system. Engine runs good, but it will not go in reverse. 1-2-3 works great. I have not put the chain on yet to rock it back and forth. The gear patten is 1-2-3-N-R

 

OK, got everything installed and running great, but it will not go in reverse. The rod on top shows what gear it is in IF you have that type of machine. Don't need in this one. Anyone have the cause of it not going in reverse? Bent forks? Not sure i would take the engine back out and split the case to find out.
