Hello, I have a 2006 redcat VX 150 with a gy6 150cc engine that has forward and reverse on it with a lever by the key. The lever is is hooked up through a cable to a gear box in the back. I was wondering, does this gear box have oil in it, and if so, what type? I haven't been able to find anything online and any help would be appreciated!
When faced with a gearbox, and no information about it, I assume it is going to be like others. If there isn't a level plug, remove the filler cap and use a wire rod as a dipstick to check oil level. Normally the level is roughly the bottom of the axle shaft. If it seems low, check the oil's thickness and smell it, gear oil smells distinctive, and is usually thicker than engine oil. It will probably be either gear oil or engine oil, the viscosity isn't that important. Not often such boxes need topping up anyway. I would do something with the breather, it is quite big and the dirt round the box shows that some will have gone down the breather. A piece of pipe going upwards and ending pointing down (so rain can't get in) is the usual, though a Suzuki style "concertina" would be neatest in that application.
Thanks for the advice, I will try to use a wire as a dipstick to measure the oil lever. Before I open the gearbox up, are these gearboxes supposed to be filled completely with oil?
