Default How much does the correct oil matter?

Attention grabbing headlines I know! That was the point, lol!
I bought a two year old 110cc Tao Tao Jeep from my brother, he was very proud of himself for meticulously maintaining the jeep for his daughters and running ethenol free fuel, breaking it in correctly and using “Mobil 1”…. The jeep wasn’t running right when I 1st got it, you had to fuss with the choke to keep it running, it liked to stall when you put it in gear and it felt just like an ethenol issue. I pulled the carb and replaced it with an adjustable Amazon unit designed for these 110CCs. It runs beautifully now but unless I idle it up a bunch it stalls when I put it in gear; so much so that I just end up starting it in gear or else it’ll crunch going from N to R or F. I want my step son to be able to use this on his own so I’d like to figure out the issue.

Heres the question: can the wrong oil prevent the transmission from shifting smoothly from neutral to reverse or forward? I see these call for 15-40 which is definately not what’s in it currently? I know using the correct type for a wet clutch could be an issue here? Anybody experience any symptoms like I have here? Thanks.

Trouble is, we can't tell what type of engine it has from that picture. Most have a centrifugal clutch, so when the engine is idling, it is disconnected and you can stick it in gear, then rev up and the drive is taken up by the centrifugal. Seems like your centrifugal is stuck engaged. These centrifugals also have a one way clutch in the middle of them, to maintain drive if the centrifugal drops out when on the overrun, which could also be stuck. However some belt drive CVT machines don't have the conventional centrifugal clutch, relying on the belt going slack enough to slip when the engine is idling. Some sportier quads have the conventional motorcycle manual clutch, your buggy would have three foot pedals if it does have a manual clutch.

To test for a seized centrifugal, engine off, in forward gear, brake off, roll machine backwards, it should roll easily, roll forwards, it should try to turn the engine via the one way clutch. If it won't roll backwards easily either centrifugal or one way clutch is stuck engaged. I can't see engine oil which is a bit thin, causing clutch drag.
