Spark Test Not Right
#1
Hi have a Linhai 300cc quad 4x4 (2011) Not running at the moment , Cranking over and not spark , I've removed spark plug and tested it against engine block getting two sparks when you turn on ignition only , And no spark when cranking engine over I've tested the coil and lead, Cdi and kill switch, stator, all seem good, anyone with any ideas ?

Just been answering a query about Linhai ignition, different model but that spark when you switch on would indicate a Kawasaki 300 style "ignitor" ignition rather than CDI, same as the other Linhai

If your wiring is like this, note pos wire from ignition switch to coil and ignitor, then your ignition is the same as most 1980s cars, 12v coil and signal from trigger coil fed through "black box" to give a negative pulse at the right time, to the coil.

Thanks for your reply much appreciated, Looking at the wiring and the Cdi here, the white wire ( ignition) running to coil And a black/yellow (pulse) to coil , when key is turned to accessories, I'm finding the black/yell pulse is also active on the cdi plug, (not just the white ignition wire) ?

As I don't know the model I can't say what an "accessories" position on the switch is for. With ignition on, you will get pos feeding through the coil into the black/yellow if you test it at the ignitor plug. If you are getting a small AC voltage on trigger coil wires when engine is spun over, earth on the earth wire, pos on the (presumably) white wire at ignitor, but no spark from plug, then it is presumably the ignitor at fault (was with the other posters bike) but note the wiring diagram also shows the blue/yellow trigger wire going to a "speed limiter" box, so a fault in that could affect the AC trigger signal to the ignitor. If your bike has the same set up I would try disconnecting the blue/yellow at the speed limiter box and see if the spark has returned.

Your bike isn't exactly like the diagram, which shows pink for the pos wires to ignitor and coil, so it may not have the limiter box. What AC voltage are you getting an from those trigger coil wires at the ignitor plug?

You only get it when engine is spun on starter and it can be well below 1v, bit puzzled as you wrote that you had checked the stator, and that is what you check on the stator. If you really are not getting anything from the trigger wires at the ignitor, disconnect and check the same two wires where they plug into the loom at the stator. If you get a voltage there when engine is spun, bell out those wires in the loom to check for breaks and find out if the blue/yellow is teed off to go to a speed limiter box.
