shift a CVT transmission
#1
What happens when you shift a CVT transmission from Low to high or vise versa without stopping? Has anyone done this? I know that it is advertised not to shift from four wheel drive to two wheel drive without stopping, but I have and nothing seems going wrong, no grinding or any strange noises.

What quad are you referring to?
I cant think of a quad , that cant be shifted into 2wd from 4wd on the fly. I could be wrong...i just cant think of one right now.
You can think of the high low area of the tranny on a quad, like the transfer case on a truck...straight cut gears, no synchros on the gears, and weak in any position other than engaged. Some movement does help the shifting of low to high and back. Lots of times if i try to shift to low at a standstill, it wont engage unless i rock the quad for and aft, so i try to do the shift as i come to a stop, but having the wheels still turning real slow, it seems to pop right in, with no noises or harshness. If i try it at any speed higher than a slow walking pace, itll grind or clunk hard.
If you shift from high to low, or the other way, and hear no grinding, and it doesnt take alot of effort, and doesnt clunk in real hard, go for it.

You can shift the brute in and out of 4 wheel drive on the fly, but due to legal reasons (kawi covering their behinds) it tells you in the manual to come to a complete stop. Because under certain conditions you could crash and hurt/kill yourself. I would not recommend that you shift an "auto" tranny while moving. It seems a bit redundent (yes busting out the big words ) to shift an auto tranny. Why didn't you just buy a manual trans quad?
