stuck transmission

On my 500 there are two rods coming back from the gear shift box. Presume yours is the same. Probably the clutch is hanging up and not letting the gears loose so when you shift from Low to Reverse, the unit never got out of Low and is now jammed in two gears at the same time. Take a BFH (big friggen hammer) and tap the rearmost lever on top of the transmission (at the end of one of the rods) to the rear. That will knock it out of Low and Reverse.
Probably it will do it again until you change your belt or drive clutches, so keep the hammer with you on all rides.

thanks for your reply. I got the problem fixed by disconnecting the two shifter linkages and the shifter went back into neutral.and then I traded the bike in for a 2007 X2 500
