My brother has a Forman 450ES and it actually does pretty well in the dunes. Just air down the tires a bit. It climbed everything that Pismo has to offer, not that that is much. I'm sure it would have a little tougher times on some of the larger dune areas but overall it did quite well.

My father-in-laws Mojave broke down quite a ways from camp and it was a good thing he was there to tow it back without a problem.

The best aproach in the dunes is to be light and have a lot of tire surface area, to float you along on top. Ute tires are usually more narrow and of course the bike itself is heavy. Remember, you are giving up 250 lbs (!) to the TRX/YFZ 450's and 250R's.

Hey, but "run what you brung"! It should still be fun. Only way they will ever know, is to give it a try.

I've never been to the dunes... but would love to try it out... I have a ( heavy ) but very nasty 750 cc Prairie, that regularly beats V Forces in the drags... I just got a set of type 6 C series wheels, with 4 - 25" X 10" X 12" Paddlemasters... I have some friends that went to Glamis last year with thier 500 Artic Cats... traction wasn't the problem for them, they were not able to get into thier powerbands, as the dunes were too steep, & sucked up thier power... that wouldn't happen to mine... ( the 4 paddle tires might ??? )... but it would be a blast to try it out... wish I didn't live so far away... where are the dunes in OK ???

It has been some time but there was a guy who posted on here several times about riding his Prairie 650 on the Dunes with a set of Paddle Masters. He said it ripped and did great in drags for the first 100 feet or so was able to climb every dune he could find. I have rode my Quadmaster 500 in the Dunes with tires aired down it went pretty much everywhere. I climbed the back side of several big dunes but didn't dare try the steep sides without different tires. Still had a lot of fun, planning on taking my prairie to St.Anthonys this weekend. Wish I could afford a set of paddle master right now.

the 4x4's get around good but the power is needed.
i have a rhino with 26" sand blasters on back and 28" mudlites on front, actualy even though they number different they are quite equal in diam.
anyways i use 4wheel for the big hills and running the dunes you can turn sharper!

Hey DIRTVH... have you seen some of the new tires out this year... there are a few that I've just seen that IMO, would be the ticket for hare scramble racing... If you get the chance, check out the new Duro 23" X 10.5" X 12" tires... these are 4 & or 6 ply tires... there is also a new Dunlop, that would work great, if they weren't 2 plys...

A Kodiak does pretty good on sand, It doesn't go really fast, but I was able to get some air (only not on purpose)
If you still have stock tires, turn them around backwards and air em down to about 3 PSI.
There wasn't anywhere I couldn't go at Silver Lake.
