I was at st. a last tuesday, i watched a stock ds 650 with paddles go up choke cherry no prob,
then a z 400 with pipe and paddles and lowerd gears, he did not make it, then my brother in law with a z400 with paddles pipe and no lid he made it probably to half way mark. i have a stock z400 with stock tires so i didnt attempt it at all, what gives? what do you have to do to make it up choke? I was really impressed with the DS, there was also a stock shee that made it up no problem.

what mods does the bike have to have, which paddles are the best?

 

Basic mods are a pipe and filter. Lower the countershaft by one tooth. Get some 21" 7 paddle Haulers on 8" wheels or an 8 paddle Glider. An 8 paddle Hauler is to much for a bolt on Z for that kind of hill. Put 12lbs of air in them and put them on the south side of your house in the sun on a warm day for a couple hrs.. This will make them bigger and have a baloon surface..The quad will not rev enough w/ an 8 paddle Hauler. A taller tire floats better. Molded tires suck for any type of really steep stuff. They will work on other dunes when bowling, but if you can't make it on other brands a Hauler will get you closer to the top then any other tire..

 

My girlfriend's KFX made it up choke stock with sand star's and a 1 tooth lower front sprocket

 

The sand conditions can make a big difference. If you go right after a rain or in the spring or even after a good windstorm BEFORE a lot of people have ridden on it, it is much easier. Three weeks ago at Little Sahara (Utah) I went up the hi-way at sand mountain about 3/4 of the way in 3rd then down to 2nd (yoshi full pipe, jetted, no lid, 13t front-14 is stock, sandstars) and could pull the main face in 2nd (there was'nt a lot of people there). On my stock raptor except 12t front-13 is stock, with stock tires I took the main hill in 2nd gear. a few months ago I tried the Raptor on the main hill and only got about 1/4 way up with stock front sprocket. Also, last weekend, I couldn't even make it half way up the hi-way in 3rd on my Z (lots of people were there that weekend). In summary, the sand gets softer and you get less floatation the more a hill is ridden on, when its wet you initially get better traction, but once it is chewed up the wet sand is much heavier and slows you down more.
