Anyone going to Waynoka for the Rattlesnae round up?
#1
My buddies and I confirmed our reservations at the new Best Western outside of Waynoka on friday. I'm a sand virgin so to speak, other than the river bottoms that I have ridden through this will be a whole new experience for me. Hope to see some of you down there and meet some of the people that I have chatted with in here over the last year. The round up is April 19th -22nd.

Some friends and I are heading down there also but, will be there around April 9th for 3 or 4 days. Looking the the Little Sahara web site it looks to be rather busy around Easter and the Rattle Snake hunt weekends. Will be my 1st time there but , some of the guys wil be upto their 4th time. Looking to have a blast no mater when we go.

Hello TeamGreen.. If your reservations are at the New Best Western you are in Alva, OK. which is 26 miles from the Dunes.. There are two motels in Waynoka and only 4 miles from the Dunes. So, if your interested: Little Sahara Motel 580-824-2511 and Trails Inn 580-824-2401..( Little Sahara is the better of the two ) These motels are 1960's vintage, and $50.00 will get you a room to sleep four. If you call quick they may have rooms. If you are brining your wives and they don't "dune" then Alva is a better choice. It is just that 26 miles is a long drive after a hard day in the sand.

We tried to get reservations at both of the hotels that you mentioned but unfortunately the guy that made the reservations didn't place the call in time and unfortunatley we have to make the journey from Alva. We are going to leave at 6:00 am on friday from here in St. Joseph MO and should be in Alva by around 12 or 1. We will certainly be hitting the dunes on friday for the sfternoon and evening and then again all day on Saturday.
Question for you though, do we have to share the park with the rattlesnake hunters or is that something that takes place somewhere else? Personally I hate snakes with a passion, but I have to say after watching The Crocodile hunter and encountering Copperheads and Rattlesnakes at the rock quarry we ride in they really don't phaze me like they used to. Thanks for the info!

There is "good news' and "bad news". No...You won't share the park with the Rattle Snakes or the crowd that comes to town "just for the snake hunt" (No snakes allowed on the Dunes.) However, this is the biggest weekend of the year for Little Sahara, lots of duners enjoy the snake hunt, and you will have a difficult time trying to find a parking space and a place to unload each day. Most people arrive atleast by the Wednesday before and they stay put for the weekend. Last year there were about three miles of cars and trailers parked on the side of Hwy. #281 and the road to the North Campground , which is about 2 miles, was packed on both sides. Even the parking lot of the Oasis Cafe (great burgers)was packed. All of the "snake" activities are in the downtown area of Waynoka and at the fair grounds. The hunting is in the surrounding country side. (And, of course Rattle Snake tastes like chicken..) If you like a crowd this is the time to come, if not, best to try another weekend. One redeeming factor is that once out on the Dunes you can find a place of your own , or join the fun with many other groups of riders.

DiehardRider.. I can't really say if the Huevos bit is from Waynoka or not. If it is not, it is a carbon copy. The "snake pit" where they were selling the snake meat looked bigger in Huevos than the pit at Waynoka. The action is the same.
