another st. anthony question
#1
I just thought I would start a new thread.
I was wondering what the blm camping area is like up there? Are there actual camping spots, or just a big open area. Are there any trees?
Just trying to get an idea of what it might be like. Is it better to stay at the resort or just to dry camp out at the blm area?
Is there a dumpstation somewhere around the blm area?
Is there a website for the blm area?
Thanks
Bat

We're going to St. Anthony this Friday. We're planning on staying in the overflow area of Desert Oasis on Sat. night then moving over to Egin Lakes because we've heard that there is lots of tress and that it's a nice area. From my understanding it's just an open dry camping area. I don't think that there is a websight, but my friend called the BLM and the guy he talked to said that it was a nice area to camp. I talked to the lady from the SandHills Resort and boy was she the farthest from friendly that you can get!!! I wouldn't stay there if that was the only place to camp! We also heard that you have to have your fires in something, so our frined is bringing the top half to a burn barrel to bury part in the sand and keep something around our fires. We're driving over dry and filling up in the well at Desert Oasis. Hope this info is of some help. Have a great time there, it sure sounds like theres plenty of steep hills to keep everyone entertained!

Thanks for the info, where is desert oasis?
I am not sure where I am going for the weekend yet. I was thinking little sahara utah, but it will be mid 90's and from what I found rexburg should be mid 70's sounds much nicer.
I am going to call the blm also and see what I can find out. I did find a website, but not much info at all. I have emailed the resort place and they were pretty rude in their response. I just asked for info.
Anyway, I appreciate your info and I think the area I am thinking of is the egin lake area. Is this the area to camp at or is there someplace else around the dunes.
Thanks
Bat

bat, the BLM area is about 2/3 open gravel type parking area and about 1/3 shady camping. If you can get a nice shady area it would be a great place to camp; I personally wouldn't like camping in the open areas - too hot, dusty, windy for me. I don't know about any overflow camping or if there is a dump station or not. I have always stayed at the "resort" but have driven through the BLM camp a few times. In short, it's nice if you can get in the trees. Egin lakes and BLM is the same thing by the way. I don't know if dispersed camping is permitted around the lakes or not but I don't remember ever seeing anybody doing it.
If you get in a bind there is an area just north of the resort that I see people camping; it is on the same side of the resort (west side of Red road) but maybe 1/4 mile further north. It is dispersed camping.
How do you plan on getting there? I have made the trip enough times to have found a pretty good way. Go north on 191 to Hoback (Hobart?) junction, take 26 West into Idaho, take 48 to Riley/Ridley/Ripley (something like that) which will get you to route 20. Go north on 20 to Rexburg. Take the "NORTH REXBURG" exit and turn left on Red road straight to the dunes. At the second (I think) flashing light you will see a sign for Egin Lakes Access; take that for the BLM camp or go straight a few more miles for the resort. Bad ways to go are through Jackson or through Kemerrer. My directions are from memory but if you look at a map it will make some sense.
I hope this helps.

Hey Brad, that is the way I was planning on going. I am not sure on all the roads and stuff, but through the hoback and then over to rexburg was my plan.
I called the blm today and they said that the camping area is under construction and that there is very limited camping spots.
I am thinking I will check with the resort and see.
Hey Brad, is there a good spot close to the resort that I could take my son and let him run around on his little 50.
At some other spots, I usually just let him do laps around the campsite, but I am sure that at the resort they would not let him do this.
Anyway, thanks for the info.
Hey Brad, when are you planning another trip to st. anthony?

Bat, you can go past the resort a little like I described in my last post and park and/or camp there and play around in the little stuff. Also, on the EAST side of Red Road (opposite side from the resort) just a 1/4 mile if that past the resort there is a fairly large parking area that may be worth checking out. It's not in the dunes but more of just sandy dirt type of area. It's between the 2 sections of dunes. There are trails from that parking area to the other side of the dunes but I recommend you put on your knobbies to get there since the trail is a little rocky; I damaged my haulers last year on that trail.
wshrdskin, go past the resort about 1/2 mile on the left side there is a place you can camp without any problems. I have seen people there before. I have seen people PARKED off the road at access points to the dunes but not camped. I'm not real clear on where you can or cannot camp in dispersed areas. I live 550 miles away so my experience isn't as good as some of the people that have been there more or live around there.
Honestly, I prefer the resort to stay becasue of the ammenities, grass and shade. Yes it costs and yes the owner can be a pain if you break the rules but that's the least of my concerns.

Thanks Wyo,
Dang 550 miles away. Seems like you'd be a lot closer. I'd prefer to stay at the resort but, The eagin Lakes access will work great, with or without shade. The construction thing doesn't sound good though. Hopefuly it will be finished when we arrive. All of my Montana trips were from scratch as will be this dune trips to LS Utah and St Anthonys. I'm sure we'll make do with whatever we find. Thanks for all your help and your web page is the best i've seen for dune information.

wshrd.....
long name sorry.
Anyway, the blm said that they are hoping to finish the construction this summer, but it may go into next summer
I am not sure what I am going to do.
My buddy wants to go next weekend and I want to go this weekend. Maybe I will go both weekends.

Thanks Bat,
Not what I wanted to hear.
I'd go both weekends. Pop back in if you will and do tell of the conditions of the Eagin Lakes access. TIA
