Please help.....belt drive q&a!
#1
OK....so what 4x4 fourwheelers are there that dont have the gosh forsaken belt drive. I heard all the do is get wet and start slipping. I would like to buy a ATV that I wont have to worry about getting something wet and it not running properly.
I just bought a Hemsin 400 4x4. It has a Yamaha 400 engine.
OK......anyway I got a great deal on it...3000....brand new with 1 yr warranty. But I took it out and am kinda not impressed.
I have been riding for a long time and got it B\C it is all mechanical. It has manual shift, and a actual lever for the transfer case. There is no push button this or electronic that.
Again...anyway...it has ONE shock for the rear axle and in my opinion the suspension sucks. Also...when i took it on the road it only got up to about 30mph. I wasnt going full out, but to me it does not feel very peppy for a 400cc. I was looking at throttle cable and carb linkage. When I have the throttle wide open it looks like it is only opening up around 60-70%.
Are new quads DE-tuned? IS it set like that to make sure the motor is broke in properly (SO you dont over rev it)?
Long story short.....I think I am going to sell my BRAND NEW Hemsin and just buy something used for around 4000. I have found Vinsons and Praries but after a quick bit of research I see they have belt drives. I enjoy going mudding and offroading more than anything and want something that can hold up to my abuse. NO BELT DRIVES

I have 1 and a buddy has 1 Sportsman 500's that both have 2" lift and 27" mud gear tires on them. One is 08 and one 09 and we have never had a problem with the belt slipping! I have had the 08 in so much water it was floating and have had both of them up to the top of the fenders in mud and no slipping. My 08 has had the belt housing filled with water to the point that it stalled the wheeler and I had to drain it. Drained it out, started it up and kept right on going. No slipping at all. NOW, that being said, this is riding in Low gear. If I put it in high gear and do the same things, it slips badly and you can smell it, but you should never be riding in mud or trails for that matter in high gear. Had them both up to about 55 on the road in high gear. I plow snow all winter with it, ride in snow up to the racks, never a problem.
No offense to you, but it sounds more like your atv is slipping than it does the entire belt drive system on every atv out there being junk. My first hand experiences on Polaris Atvs are that the belt drive systems are pretty solid.

well your only going to get water in the belt housing if your going through water high enough for it to get in. Usually its near the front rack, but depends on the make and model atv. Honda has an auto. trans. that is NOT a belt drive that works pretty well, but if you like mudding, honda doesn't have diff lock (i dont think) and high ground clearence. Arctic cat has the mud pro 700 built for mudding with stock snorkels but thats out of you price range. If anything and dont mind to,you can get a belt drive and snorkel it yourself. Or your other option is a manual trans. atv,but even then you can still get water in the air intake. If you get water in the air intake then your most likely gonna get it the belt housing on an auto. Autos do have a plug to remove to drain water.

What quads offer the diff lock feature? I have just heard that these belts are expensive and once they get wet and start slipping the only way to fix the problem is to replace it.
I would really like some feedback on the lack of power i am experiencing. The throttle cable is able to be adjusted. When you look at the carb and hold the throttle at Wide open, you can use your hand and pull the throttle linkage even more. I would say it is only running like 70%. I used to have a 1988 Kawi Bayou 220 and my old ***, beat the F++K up 220cc quad, would fly past this brand new 400cc.
If anyone doesnt know about Hensim they bought a old patent for a late model quad from Yamaha and started to produce them themselves. It has a actual "Yamaha 400cc" engine. Supposedly the exact same motor as the Beig Bear 400.
If anyone has a suggestion of where else i can look for info lemme know.

On the belt issue, I have one of the heaviest quads out there and am still on the original belt with over 2500 miles on it. The key as others have said is to keep it in low when in the rough stuff or slow going. I've been through headlight deep water/mudholes and never had a wet belt. If you do get water in the belt housing (rare if ever) you drain it (most have a plug) and rev it a bit to dry it out and you're good to go. On most machines if you did snap a belt it takes less than a half hour to change. Honda's are low compared to some of the bigger machines and do not have a full locker in the front. Every other major brand does have some way to completely lock in the front. If I'm not mistaken there may be a couple brands that still have foot shift semi-automatics in a 4x4. Maybe Suzuki and Yamaha??? But, I'm not 100% sure.

Rode a Kodiak 400 with a belt for about 1000 miles, hitting every mudhole I could find. In all the mudding I did, I only ever got water in the belt once. I opened the drain, let the water drain out, took it slow for a mile or so, and then it was wide open again and couldn't tell there was ever water in there. The Kodiak 400 did feel to be lacking on power slightly. I recently purchased a King Quad 400 that seems to have more usable power and again no problems with the belt drive (700 miles this summer).

I've put my sportsman 800 through water deep enough to pass over the racks ... and so long as you keep going so you don't breathe water I have never had a problem with it ... much less with the belt ...
I tow a trailer full of rocks from my fields several times a day at 20mph in disking season with no problems ... and on my small food plot in the bush, i pull my atv disk (350lbs or so) at low speeds without any probs with the belt
trick with belts is to operate above the clutch rpm and keep the speed in the range for your tranny range ... so for me i do more than 1800rpm and shift to high after 10mph or so
