Cool New guy needs some advice

Hey everyone, let me start by saying my names Joey. Anyways, for a while now Ive been saying I want a ATV, and Im tired of saying, i have a good job now and I want to get one, especially since now you can setup a payment.

Now dont laugh, but Im pretty sure I want a sport style atv, i want the power and speed and the abilty to go run some jumps or hills w/e. But surely I can drive through some small mud I hope because I live in GA and it is around but theres a lot of trails and such to ride with all kinds of hills.

Im looking for advice on which to go with, and a model that is easiest to upgrade for power and performance. Ive been looking at alot of EFI Raptor 700s, but Im wanting here some opinions on what will be good for me.

Thanks.

Welcome,I'm pretty new here myself.

As for a sport style quad i would personally go with a 08 yfz450.The handling and suspension is 10x better than raptors and IMO just a better all around quad. There is endless amounts of upgrades that can be done.I've riden plenty of both and from personal experience,a 450 is a lot funner to ride. I'm not knocking raptors but i'm just not a fan of them.

Upgrades can get pricey on 4 strokes.Especially when you get into porting and head work and all.But can get some massive power gains from them too.Exhaust can range from 150 used to 500+ new

How about the new 09 Raptor 700s are those a good bike? Handle my weight and handle some mud, trails, etc.

One thing to consider about the difference between the 450 and the 700 is the 450 has no reverse. I personally have no desire to push anything that has a motor on it. I also believe that the 700 is a much better quad for all around riding verses the 450. The 450 will require more maintenance and while the suspension is better, you are trading alot of other things where it is not as good as the 700. If you are interested in the 700 you may be wise to look at the new Honda 700XX. It has a ton of ground clearance and you will be able to get as close to the best of both worlds with the Honda. I own and prefer Yamaha over the others, but you cannot question the dependability, durability, and resale value of a Honda. I followed a 700XX with my 700 Grizzly and I can assure you that a 700 Raptor would NOT have been able to follow with us. The lack of ground clearance would have kept the Raptor from being able to hang. That's my 2 cents worth.

Nuff said.. Look no further, the raptor 700 is perfect for you.. YFZ's can handle your weight ( not saying your BIG or anything ) but the Raptor can handle you better. It's set up with a soft suspension, ++ torque, and responds great to modificatiions. Plus it has reverse, I know I don't like getting off my bike to push it backwards! Put a aftermarket exhaust with a good intake and you'll be hauling **** my friend! Though it will cost you some green, it is worth it. (est. $200-$1000?) Good luck!

The 450s are all very competent, but they have a harder edge to them. They require more maintenance and generally do better if trail speeds are more spirited. At your size, I think you will be comfortable on pretty much all of the mainstream sport quads, but riding them or at least sitting on some can help out in those regards. Note that you can change ergonomics to some extent via aftermarket(i.e. taller handlebars/different bend, etc.) EFI adds expense when it comes time to upgrade the power, as you will need a tuner and possibly custom tune/dyno time to get it set up properly. I think the most machine for your money can be found at the Yamaha dealer in the original YFZ450 with honorable mention to the Honda 450R, Suzuki Z400, or 700 Raptor.

Raptor 700s are nice. Several in our riding group have them and are happy with them. They seem to do a lot of things well, from dunes to trails.

Before getting too caught up in aftermarket mods, make sure you're outfitted with good safety equipment. Helmet at a minimum. Boots and chest protector recommended. I'm nursing a couple separated ribs that may have been avoided if I'd been wearing a chest protector. Let's just say I learned my lesson...
