If your looking for good oil, your on the right track with Amsoil....

If your looking for good enough oil, almost anything will do the job. I run older air cooled stuff.....so I run Rotella T 15w40 HD oil. Others get along great with a good car oil.

I would not run regular automotive oil in a wet clutch system. I tried it in a pinch once. The clutches slipped terribly bad. I went to the dealership and got the proper oil two days later and changed the oil and filter again.

I too have recently started using the Valvoline ATV 10w40. I found it at Autozone for $4.99 USD. It is a little cheaper than the OEM oil.

+1 to that. For an awesome, low cost, off the shelf heavy-duty engine oil, like said, you cannot beat Shell Rotella-T 15w40, or better yet Rotella-T 5w40. If you can stand shopping at Walmart, they tend to have the best gallon (or 5qt) jug prices on oils.

Any car oil that is NOT Energy Conserving will not cause any clutch issues.....you have to check for the EC starburst on the bottle. You are correct that if its EC it "can" cause problems.

Everything I run is air cooled....which means Im running 10w40.....in this weight Ive never seen an EC oil, they are primarily only in the lighter weights.

As for Rotella T HD 15w40....which is a automotive/heavy truck oil - it actually meets JASO specs per testing they just dont bother to go thru the process for certification or advertise it.
