Default Winch placement?

I have a 300EX, Winch and a machine shop. I want to mount the winch on the rear via a custom made bracket in place of the grab bar.

Technically, that is not a problem. My question is, does anyone have experience with winching from the rear. While I see the vast majority of front applications, I really do not want the extra weight up there.

Thoughts?

I think Montana Jacks has a similar idea with a receiver for the front and back
of the atv I have often wondered the same thing, put in on the back maybe
better traction less weight on the front end, food for thought.

I mounted a winch on the rear of my brother inlaw's warrior in the fashion your describing and it worked OK but not great. Found that if he was STUCK he had to find a point higher than the winch to be effective. If he hooked up to say the base of a tree or another quad the winch would often times pull downwards on the quad lifting the front end and digging the rear in deeper.

Very good point. Hadn't thought of that.

Curious though, wouldn’t the same be true if winching from the front? What keeps the front from digging in?

I'd say most atv's that have a winch are going to considerably heaver than a sports quad and not as likely to lift the rear not to mention the front of most sportys are very light. Secondly if you have a 4x4 all four wheels are going to assist in popping you out. And thirdly I've had the front end of my popo in very deep! When that accurs I too somtimes have to find a high point to hook on to. Just not very often compared to my B-inlaws warrior. The lower you can mount the winch in the rear the better off you'll be in your application

That makes alot of sense.

I will probably go ahead with the build. Not much else to do this winter. But I will take your experiance into account when designing the mount.

If I do complete the job, I'll post some pix.

Thanks much.

Did you get a rear mount figured out? When I got my winch, I originally wanted to put it on the back too. But once I got home and saw how easily it would mount on the front, I just did that. It's not really that heavy anyway. Here's a couple pics of it mounted. I'm just waiting on a handlebar switch to get it all hooked up.

i'll have to get some pics of mine up, i have an 03 warrior with a winch installed on the front to stop from pulling wheelies......it was getting annoying, anyhhow, if you do mount one to the back, and you haven't done so already, i'd mount it at least 8" under the rear grab bar and have some connectors to the frame itself. imho i'd keep it mounted to the front, winches weigh maybe 10-15 lb's or less....they aren't that big of a impact on the front....

as far as a switch goes, when i get some pics up of mine, i used a simple toggle switch in a 3" x 4" project box from radioshack and put my relays in a 4" x 6" project box underneath the front frame bars.....and some wiring....was an intresting project and it barely puts a drain on the battery when running.
