First thing I would get him is a safety course if you haven't already. It's a good start. Second would be a helmet, again, if he doesn't have one already. The Raptor comes in a 90cc, and a 250cc for beginners and novice riders. The 250cc can even be enjoyed by full size riders. If possible it would be good to start him on a quad where you can limit speed until you feel he's got enough experience to move up. Maybe on a friend's quad that is willing to ride with him or something like that. The 90cc quads go pretty good but will be outgrown quickly. But, the 250cc has enough speed that someone could get really hurt or worse. You will have to be the judge. Yamaha also makes a Grizzly 125cc that is maybe a good start for beginners.

Banshee is pretty fast. I'd stick with the Raptor 250 if I had to choose between the two.

I'm not sure about the top speeds of the Raptor 250 or 350. You might try asking that question in the Yamaha section. They are probably both good on trails other than ground clearance because of being chain drives. They have only about 4" in the rear.

5'-3" & 110. How old is he?

A Banshee IMO is only for experienced-very experienced riders only and those riders should have some level of fearlessness.

So far a Raptor 250 sounds about right. If you are open to other suggestions have you seen, or would you consider the Polaris Phoenix 200?

The Suzuki LTZ 250 is also a very good entry level machine. It's very forgiving to the novice rider and it is shaft drive with a reverse gear
