Lucky guy! I haven't been out on the ice in many years because of that right there. Been there done that and will never again. Thank god a buddy was with me and the truck wasn't far away the last time I went in. Many lakes in my area are spring fed and way to unpredictable. One day you might have 6 inches of ice and the next day only two. Maybe I'm just becoming paranoid as I get older? But I always hear of one or two dieing each year from falling through. Lost a friend two years ago that way. Took 30 minutes to get him out and thought he was going to be OK, but died later that night from the hypothermia.

We wait until the ice is at least a foot thick before we go out and stay away from marshy areas and where flowing water is coming or going.

Our ice is never more than a inch thick down here, and thats on a few real cold nights, then its gone.
But you will always here of one dummy falling into an almost frozen pond somewhere in the south.

I won't go on the ice until I see at least a dozen others out there on sleds or atv! Even then I'm a paranoid mess. The ice fishers always leave gaping holes and I can never see them until I'm on top of them
