hehe- those are cute, basic hills- I wouldn't even put my outty in low gear for'em-
the hill we climbed yesterday at pisgah was twice as tall, steeper and had boulders, roots, ice and turns the whole way up- no joke.- no sra sporty would've made it even half way.

With the sport quads I could see the wheel spin all the way up the hill. Up here most of our trails are on private property where the landowner is kind enough to let the clubs create trail systems. The more wheel spin the more rutted the trails get. The more likely the landowner sees the trail as an eyesore and closes it. I see signs on hills in New Hampshire and Maine that say "No wheel spin" all the time now. Utes and sporties are different. I wouldn't have dared to take a sporty up the hill Beergut was talking about. The 4wds had a tough time with 4 wheels pulling on the icy parts. The only way a sporty could do an icy hill is with enough momentum but this was a long, steep, icy uphill with rocks, and trees and lots of tight switchbacks. Speed works well in open areas, and sandy hills (where sporties are best in my mind) but up a steep twisty hill where you're constantly changing direction, and where speed is just going to make you slip on the ice and slam a tree or rock, 4wd is better. Traction. We've ridden sport quads with solid axles, chains, and the whole nine yards. They are fun, they are more tossable, but when it comes to snow, ice, rocky hill climbs (not talking about the little rocks that were in the videos) and deep mud, a sporty isn't going to handle it as well. There are just too many situations up here where speed is not the answer. I had barely gotten through a mud hole up in Maine this past fall. It was nasty. Guy on an MX bike decides to try it and sinks so far that the speed caused him to go over the handlebars and completely under water when the mud grabbed his tire. Just an example. We like both types of quads. We're just saying each has its strengths and each has its weaknesses. I've climbed a couple miles on a 40 degree slope where the foot high rocks were rolling down the hill behind me as I crawled up in 4wd laying on the handlebars. Would have never got as far as I did with a 2wd. Just some random thoughts.

the op was trying to figure out which 4x4 atv he should buy and then somehow we ended up (lightly) debating the notion that a sporty can go anywhere a 4x4 can go....
