Default Is the engine need a battery to run?

Hello

We got a 110cc Gio atv 3 yeasr ago. The starter motor broke and now i have to start it with my drill. The battery is also bad. So now i have the atv with no starter and no battery. The problem is it stall while running.
I read a troubleshooting guide on GIO website talking about a bad R/R could make the engine stall.. What do you think? Do i need to buy a new battery to restore the charging system?
My lawn mower do not need a battery to run so i tought i could simply bypass the battery. What do you think?

I rode my 1989 Yamaha 350 Big Bears 4x4 for years without a battery (battery box empty), I just pull started it and was off. All I noticed was dim headlights.

I rode my 2001 Polaris 500 Sportsman for a month with a dead battery(But still connected) before getting the battery replaced without a problem.
