Massachusetts ATV rules?

Hey there, I'm still relatively new to 4-Wheeling and I'm about to buy a quad of my own. The other night, I was riding with my dad onto our trails, and we planned on getting onto the road from the trails and riding up the road and turning around when a car started to drive by, the car was going slow, and we planned to let it pass, because we weren't on the road yet, and what do ya know? It's a cop. He rolls down his window and proceeds to politely ask us a few questions, and eventually let us carry on (we decided to turn around and go onto the trails afterwards
), which got me thinking, what punishments will I receive for riding unregistered and on a public road? It wouldn't be just crossing, it would be about a 200ft ride and then turning around. Would they impound my quad? Thanks for your help everybody!

In ma. your quad is required to be registered even if it never leaves your property. Most local police wont give you a hard if you are riding slow down the side of a back rd. However it all depends on the officer. You can expect anything from a warning to them giving you a fine (250+) and impounding your quad. If you had run into a environmental officer your quads would of been impounded.

every atv has to be reg'd in mass regardless if it stays on your property or not.
you're not allowed on any other private property unless you're CARRYING written permission by the property owner.
16 yo & under can only ride 50cc size or under.
state & utility owned property 100% illegal to ride on.
you we're lucky- had it been an EP, you'd most likely be $250 poorer (or worse, impounded)
people owning / riding atv's in mass are treated as drug smuggling murderous outlaws- personally, I will never reg my atv in mass due to their lack of resources for atv riders.
they take your reg money and it pays the overtime to add more cops to the trails; they also just enact more restrictions on the pathetic amount of "legal" atv trails currently avail - instead of funneling that money back into the sport, like NH & Maine do.
search these forums- there's plenty of mass threads to get you up to speed on atv'in in mass.
