I got a 98 sportsman 500 looking to buy a 99 sportsman 500 for parts does anyone know if the transmission would work

 

Transmission is basically the same with the exception of the speedo function and gear position switches. Your 98 has the analog speedo with the cable running back to the transmission. The gear position switches are in the shift box. The 99 switched to the electronic speedo and switches on the transmission. You can possibly use the transmission and use your speedo adapter on the output shaft on the 99 that's blocked off.
