I stay away from machines that have been modified. If they have been heavily modified, it usually means that they have been raced/ridden hard. For me, the closer to stock, the better. Now, if I know the history of the ATV and the owner, that can make a difference. Carefully inspect them and make sure you ride them both and pay careful attention to any irregularities. Good luck.
