Default Cable all twisted in winch

Can anyone tell me how to get a cable out of my winch? i want to replace with rope, but the wire cable is so "bird nested" i can't pull it off. Bolt cutters? any tips or tricks?

Can't you just turn the handle to the freewheel position, tie the hook to a tree, and back up?

Have you tryed putting it in freewheel hooking up to a tree or other heavy object and backing up.. May take a few tugs to get it free... Other option is pull it out put it on the bench and use srewdrivers and pry bars to get the nest out.. I run into this if i use my winch with synth and dont come home and respool it properly

I went with syn rope to help eliminate this problem. No matter what you use, you need to respool every so often. Always keep tension on the cable/rope when pulling it in. Also keep a rubber winch stop behind your hook to keep a little tension when not being used. Work is needed to keep a winch in good working order!
