Problem with 06 Ranger
#1
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Last Friday I picked up my 06 Ranger 500 Carb. After .6 hours it wouldn't start. There was a banging sound from under the seat. I lifted the seat and after investigating it was the fuel pump surging (trying to prime) so hard it was shaking the wall it is bolted to and creating the banging. I called the dealer they said "yep, some of the Rangers got a bad fuel pump" I took it off (no gas at all inside or in fuel line) drove to dealer (30 miles) picked up the new one, installed it and bing Ranger started right up. After one more hour the Ranger dies on my wife with the kids while I was at work. I get home, starts right up, I drive it around for about 15 minutes and yep, here is the banging and Ranger dies. Fuel pump is surging again. I leave it and call the dealer the next day. The don't know but they appear to care. Hauling the machine in is a PITA so they agree to switch out the fuel pump one more time. After sitting for 24 hours the Ranger starts right up and when I take the fuel pump off it is full of gas, I also checked the inline fuel filter and it is good. Anyone have any ideas why this is happening? Thanks in advance!

That is the first thing I thought of. I removed the gas cap and it still wouldn't start. After installing the third fuel pump it has been running but when it is good and warmed up I can hear the fuel pumping knocking under the seat. Yes, I am sure it is the fuel pump. I'll keep everyone updated. Any other ideas are welcome!
Thanks

Does the fuel line run anywhere near the exhaust or any other source of high heat. I know nothing of the rangers, but it sounds alot like what happened on an old motorhome I had. Vapor Lock. The fuel being vaporized before getting to the pump, and since it works until the engine heats up there maybe somthing similar going on.

That is exactly what it sounds like. That is also what my dealer said. I guess I have had some bad luck with the pumps. Hopefully they get the correct ones asap.
The fuel does not have time to vaporize from the tank to the pump. It's only about 12". Exhaust is far away. Good idea though.
Just a bad fuel Pump. Two of them for now.
Thanks for the info!

Well after months the issue is solved. Polaris issued me two BAD fuel pumps to the one orginally installed. I blame the dealer for not catching it. On the Fourth attempt - bingo.
No more problems. I guess it's now a recall item - a BUNCH were shipped out and a LOT of people are pissed. Including me - I have better things to do.
I am impressed with the machine. Haven't been able to stop it yet.
